BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio — A driver flipped out —literally — during a traffic stop in Ohio, performing a backflip for officers in an attempt to prove he was sober.
We watch "On Patrol Live" every weekend and occasionally they show the officers conducting sobriety tests on suspected inebriated drivers. The tests concern me because even when stone-cold sober it is unlikely I could stand on one foot with the other 6 inches off the ground, keeping my hands at my side. At my age and physical condition, standing on both feet can sometimes be challenging. On a positive note, this does encourage me to drive carefully.
It's not so much the balancing as it is following directions; basic multitasking (e.g. 9 steps, turn &c. but the driver takes 13; or arms down, lift foot , & count- "wait, you said what again?") The eye follow pen test (nystagmus) is most telling, it's about 75% accurate determining impairment; they are looking for probable cause and you have the right to refuse the field tests. Or do "Riverdance" and go viral lol
I was riding in a car with 3 other guys and we were all 3 sheets to the wind. We got pulled over for speeding and the cop was in the middle of explaining some pathetic stupid human trick he wanted our driver to perform when he deftly pressed into, and held, a one armed hand stand on the front fender of the cruiser. The look on that deputy's face was absolutely priceless.
It turned out that the guy was a serious gymnast in high school.

ReplyDeleteWonder if Daniel Shaver, or his surviving kin would approve...
