I’ve wanted to read Me and My Likker for a long time.
ReplyDeletemy dad ran shine back in eastern KY in the 1920-30's until he had a "problem" up in Ohio and headed west. changed his name and tried to blend in the San Jose area.
ReplyDeleteI heard some tales from my uncles and their friends about some of the wild/stupid stuff my dad back then. even got to meet the old still master, Clyde H. back in the late 1960's
old guy had a copper still in his barn and still making some for local use like
(his words) even saw a sheriff stop by for a jug. dad said hw spent so much time in prison
they didn't brother him anymore. he had 2-3 big ass sons around too.
best and smoothest shine I have ever tasted. he said the trick was sweet water from limestone. it made all the difference in it. as he told me, always touch it with a match
the flame should be pure blue. anything else and you might go blind or worse.
last I heard was he passed on in 75-76 or so. BIG turn out for the service though.
If you store the moonshine in a charred oak barrel for half a decade, then it becomes drinkable. Anything short of that I will take a pass on.
ReplyDeleteWe should all take advantage of the knowledge and resources currently available to know how to make distilled spirits though.
I live in Popcorn's old stomping grounds and remember the report of his suicide when he was supposed to report for prison.
ReplyDeletePopcorn says fuck you.
ReplyDeleteBest tombstone ever.
