SACRAMENTO - On Tuesday night, Sacramento city leaders decided a controversial cannabis shop can open up next to a drug rehab center, but not before business owners on both sides tried to convince the city council to vote their way in this pot shop showdown.

When I was living in Modesto back in the '90s, there was a nearby bar that had AA meetings in a back room. I'm not kidding. People attending the meeting had to walk through the bar as they were coming and going.
Used to be a bar in the Destin area had AA meetings. I went to a few there with some other newly sober friends about 20 years ago. Yeah, seems weird but the vibe was awesome. An eclectic mix of beach bums, uber wealthy, old, young, you name it. There was some satisfaction of walking into a bar without the purpose of getting drunk, sort of a middle finger to my alcoholism. To this day I remain grateful for those people in those rooms all over the country.
ReplyDeleteBack in 2012 my wife and I were traveling through the UK by train and we ended up in Edinburgh, Scotland. Seeking an AA meeting, I found one on Cockburn St. and it was in an upstairs room over a liquor store named "Whiskey World"...their claim to fame was that they had bottles of every whiskey made in the British Isles. But to get to the AA room, you had to ring a bell at the blue door next to the store entrance and be buzzed in. Apparently it's a well-established meeting in Edinburgh. I have since learned that the whiskey store may have closed, but the meeting space remains.
ReplyDeleteSuccess in to trying to teach restraint to addicts of any sort usually ends up in the low percentages, but placing the disease in juxtaposition with the attempted cure is guaranteed to fail 9 out of 10 times.
ReplyDeleteThe disease is in juxtaposition (and proximity) with attempted cures 9 out 10 times in daily life no matter how you slice it. Success/failure rates vary according to the source, but generally around 15-20% of people get, and remain sober, at least on the first try. Doesn't matter where the meetings are, it just matters that we get there and are committed to sobriety (for those that subscribe to 12 step).
DeleteSounds like one of those famous "Enterprise Zones." Can't wait until LaKrisha and Shitavius invite the local vibrancy to the grand opening.
ReplyDeleteWell... the shop is either legal or it's not. If it's legal and there are no zoning restrictions, what legal basis does the council have for stopping them? Of course it's not in the best interests of society, but that's a different subject. Next year the Council can enact zoning that makes them move, if they wish. However, from what I understand nobody buys from the legal shops anyhow so it's kind of moot.
ReplyDeleteCity came down on the side that will generate Sales Tax money.
ReplyDeleteThe smoke exhaust fans of the pot shop will probably end up close to the Rehab’s fresh air intake grills…
ReplyDelete"Culture" Lol.
ReplyDeleteTalk about hunting over bait.
They run off the only gun store in town, but drugs are ok. Are we learning yet?
We are talking about Commiefornica.
DeleteRegarding AA meetings. What goes on in AA meetings stays in AA meetings.
