  4. #10 flame sterilization? Kill the weed seed and fungus spores? Greta not happy with that method.

    1. I have a propane week burning system that looks good while operating but it doesn't work.

    2. Wait until the weeds have just begun to sprout and are most tender and vulnerable. Not for seeds, since doesn't flame them long enough for that.

  10. I've lived 2-blocks from the country for most of of my life and I've never seen a farmer doing what's going on in #10. Can anyone please enlighten me?

    1. I've never seen it myself but I've heard of farmers doing this to kill star thistle seeds in the dirt.
      I may be wrong, though.

    2. I've heard sod farmers use that technique.

    3. Weed control, we would take a 6 foot harrow and edge a field and then burn it off. In early summer the field would be weed free except for where the harrow was used.

  12. I was going to guess it's to quickly warm the soil for already planted seed germination, but that's just a guess.

  14. #5 Got what he deserved. Nice to see a real jerk get it.

#10 I can't help but look at that and think it's horribly inefficient at getting the heat into the earth to kill things. They've got to be dumping 5 BTUs into the air for every one that actually transfers to the earth. Drape an asbestos cloth over the back to trap the heat better? Reflective tin shields? Something!

Unless they're trying to flash *JUST THE SURFACE* and burn off all the pinfeathers or something, in which case it's just fine. Though given that it looks freshly harrowed, I don't imagine there's much hair on the surface.

    2. Something very much like this is used to burn low bush blueberries, removing old growth helps spur new growth and increases yield next season.

  19. #5 looks like a hotel - kid should have been messed with to get him to stop running in the hotel hallway (assuming again that's what it is). Obnoxious how people are in hotels in the morning when you arrive in the wee hours of the morning and need some sleep...and put out the Do Not Disturb sign and still hear "Housekeeping!" at 8 am after getting to sleep at 4 am. Bah! Oh, uh...thanks for letting me rant.

    1. I travel a lot, working often early hours at manufacturing sites. Go back to the hotel, take a nap before 4pm appointments. Used to get wake ups from housekeeping often. Now I take sticky notes, write down my checkout time or DNS if I'm not checking out, and stick it over the lock (I get 4 pm checkouts at most chains). Always works.

  20. #10 is used for organic farming. You till the field bare and then plant a Non GMO corn without using Herbicides. The corn comes up along with the weeds but you flame the ground when the corn is at a 4 leaf stage and the growth point is still below the ground so the corn does not die. The weeds for the most part have growth points that are above the ground so they do get fried and die. The corn continues to grow and gets ahead of the weeds that sprout later. So the corn does ok but never yields as much as a "roundup ready" GMO variety corn field that you treat with Roundup. But you can sell the product for a premium because it is grown without herbicides
