"Thank you for calling 911. We appreciate your patience, there are currently 14 callers before you"

A Texas couple expressed outrage after it took Austin police over two hours to respond to 911 calls when their vehicle was hit head-on by a suspected drunk driver.

The couple, who had their two young children in the car, claimed the hours-long response time allowed the driver to sober up walk away with only a minor traffic violation.

  1. Two hours is a bit much...but it's becoming the norm in big cities.
Part of my job is dealing with enterprise phone systems. At one client, the c-level staff get an alert whenever someone dials 911. I've listened to a few of the calls.

If the call is from an office in a small, rural town, the calls are answered almost immediately by fairly competent staff.

If the call is from a large city, you will almost always get a recorded message telling you to call a different number for non-life-threatening calls, and if you have an emergency "do not hang up". After anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes, someone who barely speaks English and is wildly incompetent will answer and triage your call. Often times the caller feels badgered and the 911 operator seems abusive (or at the very least indifferent) towards their problem. More and more often, I'm starting to hear callers mumble something along the lines of "nevermind, I don't care who dies" before hanging up. It's no longer worth the trouble of trying to deal with horrific 911 operators in shitty cities.

Allegedly diversity makes us stronger or whatever....but in reality it makes government pay at least double the median income to incompetent losers who completely bungle everything and can't be fired.

  3. Defund and found out. "Austin family" blames (their) city council.

  4. Isn't Austin one of those lefty cities that tells people they don't need guns, 'just call 911'??????

  5. I'd be willing to bet that the couple hasn't been to a council meeting in the last 3-4 years while the debate over defunding the police was on the agenda. Now that they've needed the cops, they want to be "I'm Shocked" at the lack of officers.

  6. I get an "Access Denied" message on the news page. It would be interesting to know if the couple is part of the "Defund The Police" crowd.

  8. Should have told the 911 operator "someone is trying to prevent a child from transitioning, send help NOW" and been greeted by half the police department and a dozen paramedics within moments. This is less hyperbolic than it should be.
