Why Isn't Black Bart More Famous?

He robbed more than 30 stagecoaches while Jesse James robbed maybe six. So why isn't Black Bart more famous in the annals of the Old West? Let's take a closer look. The reasons just might astound you.

  1. His lack of fame today is mainly because of his non-violent nature, I'd say. He used his brains instead of a gun. The fact that he was finally busted because of a laundry mark on a hanky was his only lapse in thought process and planning.

Consider the fact that he lived long after his 30+ stagecoach robbery as opposed to Dr. Thomas Hodges (Tom Bell) who got tracked down and hung after his first stagecoach robbery, which was also the first known stagecoach robbery in the West. Of course, it didn't help that his bunch had itchy trigger fingers and killed a popular black woman passenger in their first hold-up attempt. Idiots.

Black Bart really was a gentleman. His story should be more well known.

    1. Maybe it's because of the area me and you are from, but I never thought he was one of the lesser known outlaws. I've been hearing about him all my life and have read many, many articles about him.

  2. To be honest, the only time I ever heard of Black Bart was from Ralphie Parker in "A Christmas Story."

    1. I've seen them both. The site where the movie High Noon was filmed was about 15 miles from my house. I've been past it hundreds if not thousands of times. It's on the dirt roads I used to drive just to relax after a hard day's work.
