A California woman sold her daughter’s pet goat to her local county and district’s state fair — but now she’s suing them after they allegedly slaughtered and barbecued it.
Jessica Long purchased Cedar, the beloved pet goat, in April 2022 for her 9-year-old daughter, who cared for the farm animal every day, reported the Sacramento Bee.
What a joke. Mom screwed up and entered her daughters goat knowing full well what the end result would be. When her little woke girl figured it out Mom couldn't fade the heat. So Mom's lesson to her became "That's ok honey, your feelings trump all law and logic." Look at the pictures of that "nine year old" girl. Her streaked hair, her low cut bodice dress, her chunk overfed body. Fine job with the kid Mom, she will be a real productive member of society.
I do feel sorry for the little girl losing her goat and finding out it had been slaughtered, BUT, her own mother sold the fucking thing - auctioned it off, got over $800 for it, which seems high for a fucking meat goat. WTF did she think was going to happen? Once sold, it legally belongs to someone else, to do with as they please. Then they STOLE it "back", clearly a criminal act, but want to act like victims. The bitch should be made to pay retribution to the legal owner, and costs to the sheriff's office to investigate the theft. Cunt. Ed
The $800 price isn't unusual for such auctions. Actual market prices don't apply. The high prices paid by individuals and/or companies are designed as a reward for the kids who took the time and effort to care for and show the animals. In this case, the "mother" clearly did not explain the process to the daughter. Hopefully the legal system will properly educate both. Too bad the goat didn't sell for a bit more, then she could be charged with felony theft. (I understand anything under $950 is a misdemeanor in California).
800.00 is a lot of money, though most people who buy these animals from fairs or 4H clubs usually pay more so the money continues to help out the clubs. In fact a lot of the buyers don't even take some of the animals they purchase. They'll sometimes give them right back to the owners or they'll donate them to someone else. As far as the forlorn goat goes,if iwas still a kid goat then the meat would've been downright tasty
They don't give them back, it is called turning an animal, which means that the animal will be purchased by a commercial buyer at a previously agreed to fair market floor price. The auction price the buyer pays is basically a donation to the kids, and the animals still go to steak, carnitas, and kabob heaven
Speaking of goats, I had a bible thumper show up the other day and wanted to preach to me. I said he could come back Saturday afternoon when we were going to sacrifice a goat. He didn't think that was a good idea and he left. I told him I would pray for him...
You have to slaughter a goat pretty young for it to be any good. Cabrito is actually kind of difficult to do well and you really have to get all that yellow goat fat off of it. Coyotes on the other hand don't care. I knew a guy who tied a goat up one night and the next morning he found a small piece of a leg bone.
This is STANDARD 4H practice: the farm kids raise an animal, it's sold at auction at the fair, usually for well over the going rate, with the understanding that this is how the farm kids raise some extra money for post secondary school. Everybody bidding at auction knows they're making a donation, and rewarding the kids' hard work. The farm kids know this as well; they're in a business- you don't name your dinner (well, I've known a few named "pork chop", and right tasty they were too). This was either gross ignorance on mom's part, or outright lies to the daughter. Toss the suit, and send mom a bill for wasting the court's time.
It’s in the damn fair regulations,(admittedly I haven’t read the one for this fair) Steers Swine Goats Are terminal projects at every fair! The auctions are provided to allow bidding wars as a reward for hard work in raising the animals, which can get quite high. I’ve seen hogs go for $5-6 a pound for a 280 pounder. That would be grandpa buying that one lol. Or they got a sponsor at a company to bid up for them. The point is meat animals at a fair is a terminal project and that’s just a part of life and the life cycle of meat animals. Sadly her mother and the club she may have been in, have let her down big time! She will most likely be prevented from ever showing or participating in another event at Shasta county fairs.
Notice that there was no mention of the mother offering to refund the money her daughter received. The child has now learned a life lesson that her mother has obviously never learned. Hope it was tasty.
The article does say that the mother contacted the buyer, who "didn't seem to mind" that she did not want the goat slaughtered, and that she "offered to pay the parties back for the animal and any expenses." If she was willing to buy the animal back and refund the money, and the buyer was cool with that, then it does seem a bit pig-headed to insist on seizing and slaughtering the animal just to teach a young girl a harsh lesson. Mom shouldn't have taken the animal without arranging the refund first, and she shouldn't have lied to her daughter about what happens to auctioned animals - but a criminal citation and fine seem adequate, if the buyer was willing to let the animal go and accept a refund. Having an awful mother is enough punishment for the kid.
CBO: Yeah, that's the other part of the story. Mom offered to pay for the goat to the buyer. He agreed. Offered to pay all the fair's expenses. At that point, things should have stopped.

As crabby old bat noted above, the Mom did offer to pay (see below). As to lessons being taught, the child learned that Kalifornia cops will travel 500 miles to take a goat but won't travel 5 feet to arrest an illegal. And commenters here that know they're going to ultimately try and confiscate their guns think this is fine police work. Orcs gonna orc. Some really great thinking on the part of the fair. Great publicity. The lower quote is from the lawyer.
The mom said that she had contacted Dahle, who didn’t seem to mind that she wanted to save the goat from slaughter, and Long offered to pay the parties back for the animal and any expenses.
"Fair officials and sheriffs abused their power to teach this little girl a lesson. She bonded with Cedar like we bond with our dogs. And as his owner and a minor, she had the right under California law to reject the money and save his life. So to open a sham criminal grand theft investigation, then drive 500 miles at taxpayer expense, is appalling."
I just googled "California goat sanctuary" on a whim and got multiple animal sanctuary hits. That's like 30 seconds of research it would take to find a happy home for the goat, where her daughter could probably even go to visit. Of course they're unlikely to pay $900 for it.
Funny thing too. If I sell something and then steal it back, I've committed theft. There's really no dancing around this fact, no matter how much an attention starved lawyer says or thinks otherwise.

For all of you that think that since the mother offered to pay for the goat and the fair's expenses (after she stole something that did not belong to her), try going into Kohl's or any other store, shoplift $900 worth of merchandise, then offer to pay for it when you are caught. Let us know how that works out for you. Besides being incredibly stupid, the woman is nothing more than a thief, and not very accomplished at that. She deserves, at the very least, a jail sentence, and her photo in the paper as a convicted thief.

DeleteShould ramp up the case and charge the farm owners where they recovered the goat with receiving stolen property.

ReplyDeleteVery nice touch!
DeleteWhy would you sacrifice a goat?
DeleteRemind me to buy you a soda-pop.
DeleteAnd lady:
You sold the goat.
The goat is no longer yours.
You no longer have a say in what the new owner does with it.
This is how Life works.

ReplyDeleteBut law enforcement doesn't have the funding to chase criminals?
ReplyDeleteShe stole the goat, making herself a criminal and thus the LEO went through an investigation and recovered the stolen property.

There two types of goats - dairy goats and meat goats. They're called that for a reason.
ReplyDeleteDunno about barbecued goat, but spicy marinated goat Kabob goes down pretty easilly.
