Thar's gold in them thar fryers

NEW YORK - Suffolk County police arrested a man for stealing cooking oil from a Chick-fil-A on 200 Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station.

Hector Castrol-Espinal, 23, was charged with five counts of petty larceny and is scheduled to be arraigned in Central Islip later this month.

Police said Castrol-Espinal stole oil from the restaurant and hauled it onto a rented truck and then resold the oil.

  1. Since you can filter it and burn it like diesel it's worth several dollars a gallon...

  3. And here I am pouring my old grease into a gallon jug and trying to hide it in my trash so the garbage truck will take it away. Damn.

    1. I take a coffee can, put a one gallon zip-lock inside like you would a trash can, pour my cooled grease into it, seal the baggie and toss it into the trash. No fuss, no muss, and it takes up very little room in the garbage.

  4. My parents owned a restaurant for over 30 years. The cooking oil from their fryers was dumped into 55 gallon drums outside the back doors and a rendering company would pick it up every 2 weeks, and send them a check every so often, I am not sure if it was monthly or quarterly. But it was enough to pay for around a third of the cost of new oil for the fryers.
I wonder if that is what this guy was doing, selling the used oil to a reclaimer or using it for biodiesel? There is a market for used oil for that now as well.

  5. A leftie heroine known locally as "Betty Biodiesel" filled her VW diesel Golf with that stuff about 20 years ago.

    Blew every seal in it.
