Lab aims to end NYC lithium-ion battery fire nightmare

What was once an emerging threat has become a full-blown crisis in New York City with 220 lithium-ion battery fires recorded last year, equaling to about one every 36 hours.

  1. The $cience says it is possible. However the science thinks not.

  2. I would have never guessed that NYC's method of addressing a problem would involve banning something. What's the over/under on how long it takes to have a department of battery inspectors and annual battery safety inspections?

  3. How about all those EV's and in 5 years all those old EV's.... I would not have one in my home.

  4. Energy storage is the death of solar and wind. Getting UL listing for residential-installable high capacity batteries, for example, is lengthy amd expensive. Chinese imports sold as "off-grid", meaning fugggettabout homeowners insurance. It is easy to cobble together something that works, but is not safe. People who ride bikes for a living dont have a lot of money.

  5. There are safe lithium chemistry batteries available right now. Cost and energy density are the main issues. And the purveyors of cheap lithium cells don't care. Fuckin' UL labs ain't gonna accomplish shit.
