I was the demo man. 0351 106's, rockets, flame throwers and demo. Never saw a flame thrower, saw 106's from a distance in the rear. When I left I was a squad leader in rockets and still demo man.
Spitting distance from Da Nang airfield and beneath Marble Mountain was a large underground hospital. It was used by the VC/NVA throughout the conflict, undiscovered. Used to ride shotgun on the mail truck and ,unknowingly, pass by it often. Sez, 1st ANGLICO class of 71’
I was on xmas island when that was discovered. I was told ya could have driven six bys inside that complex. When they went though that found warm bodies in racks in the hospital. They gave em a death shot. Yup, hiding in plain sight.
I heard the wrong year too. I did not think it should have been called tunnel rat cuz there was actually very little about it. I'm glad it was posted but did a lot of fast forwarding. No pictures that I saw of a GI climbing in a tunnel, with both feet, tied to a rope. I believe you will know what I mean by that.

ReplyDeleteFortunately, at 6'4" there is no way in hell I would ever be tapped for such duty, or any other claustrophobic's nightmare job.

DeleteThanks, man but the Tet Offensive was in 1968. Shortly after seeing that I got tired of seeing the same photos over and over.
