Commentary: Staying Sane in the Era of Rainbow Flag Totalitarianism
Many years ago, when I was just out of college, my friend George Hall introduced me to a punk rock song from the soundtrack of the 1984 film Repo Man. “Institutionalized,” by the group Suicidal Tendencies, is the darkly comic saga of a teenager named Mike who finds himself committed to a psychiatric facility merely because he asked his mother for a Pepsi. The chorus of the song contains this frantic refrain:

Brilliant song!
ReplyDeleteThe soundtrack of my youth.
DeleteIce-T did a cover of that song with Body Count. It's hilarious and I really get where he's coming from. Especially his encounter with the vegan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9jXnZS3ouU

One was pretty well out though the other was less obvious but known anyway. They were just like all our other friends. Nobody gave a shit. Thing was, just like those I worked with later, they may have been Gay, but they quietly did their work, and weren't in your face.
ReplyDeleteEvery single gay person I've ever known was like that.
DeleteThere was once a live and let live mentality in the fUSA. I miss that America.
