    1. Yes, in fact I have, and the prices are inline with all other inflationary prices these days. For some reason I am unable to find Sabretts though and I find that vexxing.

  3. When I was a kid, we would have something similar. Hot dogs and potatoes in tomato juice. One of my faves way back when.

    1. What did you think we're going to make the hotdogs out of?

    2. Vegans are always useful for trimming the grass and keeping weeds down.

    3. Cheap comfort food? I'll contribute something I eat regularly to remeber my roots. I call it Paddy Chicken.

This dish was first made in Vietnam, using captured Viet Cong rice, a C Ration can of canned chicken, a can of mushrooms from a home care package, an onion “borrowed” from the company mess hall. Salt and black pepper came with C ration packs. It was good enough to repeat per original, but back home you can dress it up with additional ingredients – though it won’t still be “authentic” traditional.

      1 cup rice
      2 cups water
1 6 oz. can of canned chicken (Hormel or Swanson’s works as well as the green can stuff)
1 can (small) of canned mushrooms.
      1 small onion finely chopped.
      Salt and pepper.

Bring the water to a boil and add the rice. Stir and cover. Reduce the heat to low and simmer. Add the chopped onion. After about 5 minutes, add the canned chicken, including any juices. Add the canned mushrooms, again with the juices. Add salt and pepper. Cover and simmer until the rice is done and the water has been absorbed or boiled off. Serve and enjoy.

  5. Every so often I’ll eat a can of baked beans with hot dogs. I will however try her recipe.

  6. Then there's a fresh pot of beans with cornbread. The next day, beans and cornbread. Same for the following day. Then make chili with the leftover beans, with cornbread. And the same for two more days. On the seventh day, chili dogs.

    Repeat.

I've done this. Have a monthly splurge day with porkchops, mashed taters and corn.

Then start it all over again.

    1. Done that too. Sometimes when the bean pot gets low, take the soupy water and any left over beans, add a bit of lard and mash together, fry up in a skillet and serve on a tortilla.

    2. I look forward to cornbread for breakfast with a side of meat and maybe eggs. Lots of butter on the bread and warm maple syrup.

  7. Onion sandwiches. Light spread of mayo if eaten at home and could be had. A slice of cheese and two thin slices of onions, wrapped in wax paper for school lunch..
