Next, they'll teach them how to drive a stick shift
For the first time in 72 years, Oregon motorists can grab a fuel nozzle and pump gas into their cars on their own, since a decades-old ban on self-serve gas stations has been revoked.
I was out there in 2018 or 2019, don't recall which, and I pulled into a WaWa for gas and a sammich. I'd heard they had good sammiches. Anyway, I hopped out of the truck and was sticking my credit card into the pump when a chubby gal came running up yelling no, no, no, you can't pump your own gas out here. Apparently she'd seen the out of state tag. I asked her why not and she said it was the law. Then she said, do you know why the government won't let you pump your own gas in New Joisey? I said well no, why not and she said, "because people from New Joisey are too fuken stupid to pump their own gas" and shot me a big grin. I said that I was in no position to challenge her expertise, but I had seen some innovative ways of driving since I'd been out there. You got it, she said.
A lot of the comments on one post I saw about this were from people whining about putting people out of work. I asked how many of them really care and if so, do they use the self0checkout at the store. (Something I refuse to do unless I get a discount, I make the single attendant check me out when they get pushy because a lot of shoppers don't like the idea.)
For the next five years, Oregonads will pull up to the pump, wait ten seconds, and then lean on the horn, expecting Achmed to run out and pump their gas.
A few years ago I was visiting Glacier National Park. At a gas station nearby two old ladies were in panic: they did not know how to fill up their tank. I did my boy scout duty for the day. Yep. Those ladies were from Oregon.
I was in south-central Mexico this past March for a wedding. We asked our driver to stop at a c-store so we could get some cases of water to store in our hotel room. The gas pumps were empty but there were three hombres sitting on stools waiting to pump gas for a customer. Finally a 125cc motorcycle pulls up to the pump needing a few liters (about $5 US). They were overjoyed because it meant a 5 peso tip (the exact cost for using the restroom). A tough living.
When I still lived in that shithole and the attendants weren't moving fast enough for me, I'd just jump out and start to pump my own. They always came a runnin. And I just played dumb (can't pump our own gas??!?) even with OR plates. Simple pleasures
Some years ago I stopped for gas at a Costco in Warrenton, and after a time I got tired of waiting for someone to come pump my gas. So I got out and pumped my gas. I was screwing my gas cap back on when the middle-aged Karen walked over and very sternly said, "Sir, it's illegal to pump your own gas." I just looked at her as I got back in my car and suggested she call the police.
That leaves the state of NJ folks, by law, mandating Somalis pump their gas.

DeleteBut did the price of gas go down?
ReplyDeleteNo, the new law says that self serve and full serve must be the same price.
DeleteThat is how it is at the store. If you're willing to wait and go through the checkout, it's not more than the price of using the self checkout.

ReplyDeleteNo kidding. Last time up to visit it was either Achmed and his fleas, or Zeke and his meth.
DeleteThe one job where a high school diploma makes you over-qualified.
ReplyDeleteUS Congress for democrats?
DeleteI don't know, I've seen some deep stupidity at the pumps. Then there are the countless videos featuring such unbelievable stupidity.

ReplyDeleteIn NJ I was on my ElectraGlide and a pump attendant tried to fill my tank. That happened 3 times and all 3 times they backed away.
ReplyDeleteSame in Oregon. Back up, peckerwood.
