Robbie Robertson of The Band dead at 80

Robbie Robertson, the frontman of the classic rock group The Band, died at the age of 80 in Los Angeles this Wednesday.

Looks like Garth Hudson is the last man standing in that band, and he's 86 years old.

  1. Garth always looked 86 years old. How ironic he is the last man standing. So dispiriting to watch them all go, one by one.

  2. As Barnes in 'Platoon' so eloquently said...'everybody gotta die sometime'.

  4. I watched a movie/documentary from the point of view of Levon Helm. I still need to watch the one from the point of view of Robbie Robertson.
There are always different personalities in bands that can cause problems, but the one thing about The Band is that no matter the internal problems, they sure made some damn fine music. Growing up in the 70's I loved what turned out to be their most famous songs. I just never paid attention to the name of bands who performed back then. I have been listening to some of the stuff from my late teens on youtube lately.
The music made today can't compare, while there are a few new things that are quality. It is like one of the gals in my old rock band used to say. No matter what technology they come up with, it always comes back to people who can play and sing. I have listened to singers with their mikes isolated during a concert. You can find pretty fast which singers today are the real deal.

  5. I still hear his music played often on "Iceberg" radio on SiriusXM. Canada is very proud of their native son.

  6. This is a kick in the gut. Robbie led one of the greatest bands ever. To me, 'The Band' was Beatles level stuff at least. Don't even get me started on Levon Helm. One of the GOATs of music...
