A sad situation all the way around

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- No charges will be filed against a homeowner who shot and killed a 20-year-old University of South Carolina student who accidentally tried to enter the wrong house on the street where he lived and was mistaken for a burglar, police said Wednesday.

The Columbia, South Carolina, Police Department said that after an investigation, and consulting with prosecutors from the Fifth Circuit Solicitor's Office, the fatal shooting of Nicholas Anthony Donofrio early Saturday morning was deemed a "justifiable homicide."

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess alcohol was involved.

  1. Underage, drunk and an ugly drunk if he broke a window to get to the door knob. He was staggering home from somewhere and that group is now in DEEP shit for serving someone underage. Also, where was his wingman that he was alone?

  2. I live in a college town where the number of students (abt 20k) outnumbers the year-round population. People getting the wrong house happens with some regularity, especially on game days, usually with family homes near campus, and usually by drunk students. Most families brave enough to live near campus are naïve liberal faculty members, so students are very likely safe.

    1. Sounds like State College, PA, home of Penn State. One of, if not THE bluest counties in Pennsylvania. (The other ones - Philadelphia, Dauphin (Harrisburg, state capital), and Allegheny (Pittsburgh). Montgomery County, where I live outside Philadelphia, is also turning bluer by the minute.

  3. " attempted to enter by repeatedly knocking, banging, and kicking at the front door while manipulating the door handle

... Donofrio broke the front door glass window and reached in to manipulate the doorknob ..."

    Of course he got shot.

  4. FAFO... drunkeness is not a defense, it just makes the FA and the FO parts more likely.

  6. If Donofrio had been black then it would have ben a hate crime for defending one's home. But as he was white they'll let it go...

  8. Yeah, if he'd been black there'd be riots. Poor homeowner did nothing wrong, only cops get to fire warning shots. Dude should have never been left alone if he was that drunk. What a fucked up, stupid tragedy. Damn.

  9. Either he got ripped at his frat or was partying in Columbia's "5 Points" area full of clubs & bars, it's a college kid's favorite place here. The Columbia PD is forever trying to permanently close one troublesome bar or another for all sorts of reasons.

  10. No lawsuits, no riots, no burning, no looting (they always get the last two the wrong way round). The deceased must be white
