How exactly does one NOT miss a barge when on a jet ski?

Ashland City, Tenn. (AP) - The weekend collision of a jet ski and a barge on a Tennessee waterway has left officials searching for a 9-year-old boy whose father died in the crash.

  1. That's a shame. Terrible for the family of the riders. I always feel bad for the guys like the crew from the towboat having to respond to these things too.

  2. Ignorance or stupidity. Jet skis can be hard to turn at high speeds, and cutting the throttle is often the wrong choice, as that takes out the skis' ability to turn, because it is the jet of water that serves as the rudder. Sorry about the child.

  3. They like to ride the bow wave. Zoom in and out, catch the wave for thrills.

  4. My friend's step daughter was out learning to drive from her mother [both shining examples of dumb blonde] when she turned a corner and ran into the back of a legally parked semi trailer. They wanted to sue the owner of the trailer for parking his trailer where he did. Again, legal parking spot. I told my friend that if that had happened to me, I wouldn't tell anyone I'd been stupid enough to run into a parked trailer, much less a legally parked one. All of a sudden the complaint went away.

  5. Jet skis liked to jump the wakes in Barnegat Inlet. Usually once or twice a year they got run over by a dragger or long liner who couldn't stop or maneuver even if they wanted to. My favorite was a boat that tried to run the gap between a tug and the barge it was towing. The steel cable between the two stopped the boat dead in the water than it got run over by the barge. Darwin for the win.

All one can hope for is that someone else learns a lesson from this little incident.
