Kenny, I'm about your age and I listened to almost every Jerry Clower recording when I was growing up. Not only did he reflect my dad's hunting/life stories, but he also brought to mind many of the (mis) adventures that my brother and I had with our friends, growing up in the boondocks of FL. Thanks for the memories.
My dad turned me on to him when I was 16-17 years old, but after a couple years I got away from it. A year or so ago I was delighted to see a bunch of his shows and records on youtube. I was listening to almost an hour of him every night for a while there.
In the early 70’s he came on before the Alabama Crimson Tide games. Back when respect was especially heard on the radio. He never uttered an off color word anytime with his stories, especially about Marcel. Simple times.
My dad met him once, at the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting. Dad, whose name was Bruce Newman, found out that Marcel Ledbetter was based on Jerry’s childhood friend named Boots Newman and Jerry laughingly told Dad that he was probably kin to the real life folks on which the Ledbetters were based. Dad was tickled by that and I must’ve heard him tell that story a dozen times over the next 20 years.
My late Grandmother LOVED Jerry Clower! When I was around eight or nine she took me to Austin to see him perform. I remember her laughing so hard she had to excuse herself to the ladies room! Guy was a riot. 😂
Interesting

DeleteHis son Ray was a frat brother at Miss State. And Marsha Blackburn is our most famous Little Sister. Met Jerry several times due to that.

ReplyDeleteThe late, and greatly missed columnist and essayist Louis Grizzard was known to describe Jerry Clower as "A great American philosopher".
I think he nailed it.
