About #3 - back in the 1970s and 80s, it was pretty common to see a water-skier being towed down an irrigation canal in California by either a horse or a pickup. Canals are quite a bit wider than ditches, though.
You could always tell the beginners, though. They were the ones sporting a nice road rash from being scraped along the concrete sides of the canals.

#4 My parents bought an old house for the family when I was 5 years old. The house had a chandelier in the living room made out of fancy glass and such. My 2nd to the oldest brother was practicing his gold swing in the living room, and you guessed it, no more fancy and likely very valuable chandelier.

ReplyDelete#3 big in S. AZ too. Saw a guy jump an overflowing gate once - impressive on a narrow ditch. Alcohol may have been involved - usually.
ReplyDeleteSame here but pulled with an old truck after some rain to hold down the dust from the ditch bank. We also pulled a 12"X18' steel plate behind a truck across a dry lake bed and the usual car hood through a sand wash. Alcohol was also a usual occurance.

ReplyDelete#3 - ahh, the old ditches beside fields. As a young child, me and a friend with our trusty Daisy BB guns patrolled some ditches behind the neighborhood, shot and killed something like 20 water moccasins. You couldn't pay me enough to actually get in one, knowing they're full of snakes.

A friend of mine lived out west of Waterford near the main canal. He had the tow rope tied to the board and would tie that to the drop. Had a short rope with the handle attached to the board. The current was fast enough that he could climb onto the board and get to his feet and "ski", without moving forward.
