"I" CAN be considered grammatically correct in some instances of "other person/people and I", but you are correct in that in this instance he should have used "me". The sentence is not very good, grammatically speaking, in any case. I cry for the current generation. Pretty soon "Idiocracy" will be more than just a science-fiction comedy.
