Remember when the brothas all smoked Kools?
CHICAGO — A career burglar who recently served eight years for burglarizing a North Side liquor store of cash and 19 packs of Newport cigarettes is now facing the possibility of more prison time. Prosecutors say he took 16 packs of Newport cigarettes during a burglary at a West Loop Walgreens.

I went to OSUT at Ft. Benning (Now Ft. Moore) in August 1981, went to West Germany in November. I learned very quickly that if you bummed a smoke off black soldiers stateside you got a Newport, in the FRG you got a Kool.

ReplyDeleteThat was so when they pulled a smoke from the pack, they didn't touch the filter end with their little dick skinners.
DeleteOne girlfriend in College smoked Newps. She had a terrible, phlegm-producing cough. She said the Newps helped make her chest feel better. ACKchooally, I thought her chest felt pretty good with or without her smoking Newps. . . . .
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in high school the black guys smoked Kools. The white guys that smoked menthols smoked Salems.
ReplyDeleteIn 1968 when you opened up your K ration box, when you saw a menthol cigarette box, you immediately held it up, said the brand name loud enough for black dudes to hear and then traded one them who had Winston’s, Camels, etc in their ration box…
ReplyDeleteI think you meant C Rations. K Rations were phased out in 1948.

DeleteThey were probably still the same rations from 1948, just that they had so many that it took that long to use up.
