California's War on Fast Food Jobs

During a recent meal at a family-run restaurant in a small town, I noticed that the owners included in the menu an apology note to customers for the high prices they were charging. We all understand the owners' predicament, as inflation has driven up the costs of pretty much everything, especially groceries. Nevertheless, customers who try to live within their budgets have little choice but to pare back their unnecessary restaurant trips.

  1. Most fast food places are actually franchises and many of them are owned by families that only have one or two locations. A rule aimed at big corporations like McDonalds actually just ends up hurting the little guy. The corporations themselves are insulated from these kinds of things by letting the franchisees deal with it.

  2. My wife and I already cut back on fast food. We don't even grab a bite on trips, we tend to pack a lunch from home. I guess this means we cut back on date night dinners out too. Maybe it's time to go back to the 30's and just gather the family around the radio to save money on expensive streaming services. I really feel for those on a limited fixed income.

    1. If ya make it a rule that you'd never eat anywhere where the folks cooking & serving the food aren't anyone you'd invite to eat at your house you'd probably never eat out again!

As far as entertainment goes, we don't have cable or Internet other than access on our phones. Why pay them to poison ya mind? No mass media BS unless it's old movies or old time radio shows.

    2. Week & a half road trip with our pup.
Limited to where we can stay & eat.
Not taking another one until we buy an RV.
Fuck fast food & fuck shithole hotels that charge you an extra $25 for your housetrained pet.

  3. Two words in the title are unnecessary: 'Fast' and 'Food'.

  4. Newsome should use his mandate super powers to cap prices on fast food.
$5 maximum for a burger or sandwich for starters.
Underpaying staff and gouging the customer stops now.

    1. Yeah, because more government interference will work out even better! Price caps cause one thing. Shortages, and you want price caps on food.

  5. If minimum wage kept pace with productivity, it would be $21.50 today. Adults are forced into these fast food jobs because we off shored all of our manufacturing. Next up Robots! The current situation will continue until it can't. Then there will be blood in the streets.

    1. You basically said what my buddy said awhile back, with a lot fewer words. But he got called all manner of names, including leftist, which is hilarious if you actually know him. No, he's autistic, hyper religious, and socially retarded, not leftist. He's probably on several watchlists, actually. Dude was seriously confused, and a little ticked off at what he saw as unfair treatment, which is how I learned about this blog. I reassured him, but, reading your comment, I'm glad he (being a respectful, dutifully rules-following autist) followed Mr Wirecutter's instructions and did everything possible to make it impossible for him to violate Mr Wirecutter's "go away" command on any of his personal devices. I'm sure I'll be told the same now, which is fine. I'm not autistic, just a dick who's loyal to his friends.

    2. What in the fuck are you talking about?

    3. You have it backwards. A minimum wage job is just that. If you want a higher paying job, go get one. The reason minimum wage jobs exist is to provide you with a skill you can use to get a better paying job, without making me pay $15 for a cheeseburger, fries, and a Coke.

    4. Funny, the people who were working at Fisher Price or Goodyear or Briggs and Stratton and making enough money to raise a family are now at Fast Food or Wal Mart making minimum wage or just a little above. The Chicken Plant would rather pay illegals than locals. It goes back to Clinton and the Republicans. NAFTA, MFN status for China. The government has actively worked to make sure we have plenty of poor people to keep the Chamber of Commerce happy. Just like before the tobacco quotas ended. The quota holder figured out they could buy a new truck every year if they hired Mexicans instead of a new truck every other year hiring locals.

    5. The media made fun of Ross Perot's ears and everyone had a good laugh and elected BJ Clinton. All those jobs are gone now, there's only a big sucking sound left.

    1. Why pay more when you can pay less? Tell me, what is the benefit?

    2. The benefit is workers who don't have to work 3 jobs to live at a base level. That increases productivity.

    3. Because you can't extract more tax without initially paying them more money. Its the government that's money hungry...
