In the Kentucky governor's race, the gun policy debate is both personal and political

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Struck by tragedy when one of his closest friends died in a mass shooting, Kentucky’s Democratic governor supports a proposal meant to keep firearms away from people deemed as threats to themselves or others. His Republican challenger offers condolences for his rival’s loss but opposes the measure.

In one of the most personal exchanges of their campaign for governor, Gov. Andy Beshear and GOP Attorney General Daniel Cameron staked out their stands on gun policy during a recent debate in Louisville. It’s a wrenching issue in Kentucky’s largest city, which has recorded at least 100 homicides in each of the last four years including 2023, with a high mark of 174 killings in 2021, and has struggled to come to terms with gun violence.

  2. My condolences on losing your friend but personal feelings and not something that should be used for law or policy... The law has to be constitutional not feel good

  4. Leave guns on the street and take criminals off the street is a common-sense solution to the illegal shootings. But liberals aren't interested in "solutions to problems". They're strictly motivated by using their powers to control people who have different ideological views.

  5. I live 100 Miles from Louisville. But, I get local Louisville news every Morning. The murder rate for a medium size city is outstanding. No mention of race, of motive ( drugs, gangs, girlfriends, feuds, etc.) Only guns! Black relatives on camera lamenting that no one will come forward. It's a dance the media and the Democrats officials do every day, along with BLM. Everyone knows this whether black or white, so NO ONE cares, and yet it goes on everyday. The same in city after city. Bottom line... Refuse to allow them to disarm you because they continue to kill each other. We can't stop it, and they don't care.

  6. Picking between Lil Andy and Cameron is like picking between a Hoover and a Kirby. They both suck. Cameron has never seen a jackboot he didn't lick. Lil Andy is just as bad. A Pox upon them both. I will be writing in Willie Nelson. I won't give consent to either of those big government sycophants.

    1. Wilie Nelson is no better. He's a anti American big government type. Which is funny given his run in with the IRS.

  7. Louisville - a crime-ridden, Midwestern pesthole located on the wrong side of the Ohio River. They’re not Southerners and the rest of the state hates them intensely.
