Massive Recalls Announced Over Bacterial Contamination In Pet Food

The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a major pet food recall, Thursday, over bacterial contamination.

Multiple popular brands of dog and cat food are part of the national recall, including Victor brand Hi-Pro Plus dog food, Super Premium Dog Food, Wayne Feeds Dog Food, Eagle Mountain Pet Food and Mid America pet food, according to the CDC. Owners are being urged to throw away any of these items they may have at home, but should not touch them if possible, as they may be contaminated with salmonella.

    1. I did this for my last dog, after he had a pancreatitis attack and there was no viable low-fat food to feed him that wasn't retardedly overpriced. I'd estimate it cost from 50-100% more than buying off the shelf food for him, depending on whether or not I caught sales. I also supplemented it with dog vitamins since those tend to be added to bought food.

It's a LOT of work to do this and anybody who says otherwise is a liar, but it was a literal labor of love for me and it gave four more years of life to a dog who had supposedly received a death sentence.

  2. I see those three magic letters CDC and all I can think is it is a big lie. Someone forgot to send the tuesday check to the CDC.

  3. They are raising the price of owning a pet. Younger Americans may decide not to own a pet, or, may decide not to have children. Either way, for Our Benevolent Overlords, a WIN!

  4. Fortunately for Boudreaux I don't feed him any of those brands

    2. It is so easy to make safe food, and that is by irradiation. Passing the sealed bags of food through a gamma radiation source will ensure that no salmonella or any other bacteria or virus survives. And no, it does not leave the food radioactive.

    3. I buy mine at my local ag store, it's a Lone Star brand called Star Pro..... He's on the maintenance formula, 4 years old now,. I started him as a pup on this brand and he's always been a healthy active guy with a beautiful coat so... Price isn't bad, comparable to Purina but much better in my opinion..

    5. Anon 9:54 is correct. When I helped out my brother at his restaurant, I took a food safety course so I could be the designated safety rep when he wasn't there. Gamma irradiation will kill anything, and leaves no residual 'radiation' (as in radioactive isotopes, atomic bombs, death rays, sci-fi movie plots). But it's 'radiation' and the public thinks all radiation is bad.

    6. Enlighten us as to what would be a gamma radiation source. Im game.

Cobalt 60, and less frequently X-ray, is the radiation source. Sterilization has to be done in a dedicated facility where food, or other things like medical equipment are placed in a containment room. Workers are evacuated, then a cobalt source is raised from a vault, sterilizing everything in the room.

  5. Not that I trust the CDC for anything, but thanks for posting this and actually, the CDC report is pretty informative, showing the affected states, the food product packaging and so on.

  7. Most of that crap comes from China

  8. I've fed my dog Victor ever since I adopted her. Good company. The salmonella was found in only three lots of Victor Select Beef Meal & Brown Rice Formula, and it was from an outside-sourced ingredient (no, not from China). There were only 7 reported illnesses. They expanded the recall to all lines because of the possibility of cross-contamination.

  9. What about Dootie flavored dog food mmmm. Mmmm.

  10. I don't understand that. Outdoor cats and dogs can literally eat garbage that has been fermenting in the sun for a week or two; and not get sick.

  11. Is this food coming from the ccp?
