    1. Here in Michigan, they one time sold lottery tickets for less than a dollar, I think 25 or 50 cents each. That is certainly trying to get money from the poorest people who certainly cannot afford it.
They started the lottery with the promise to use the money for education. Which they did, no doubt about it. Of course, what they failed to mention was the fact that all they did was to eventually cut money from the general fund that had been going to education.
Just like our states sales tax on food. They played games with it, dropping the 4% sales tax on food you buy in the store, but raising it on ready to eat food and everything else you purchase like a lawnmower, towels, stoves, etc. to 6%. Just recently the Democrats have been rumbling about changing that so they can get more money to waste.
The Empress of Lansing Whitless and company had to spend billions of covid money, or they had to cut the state income tax rate. While they managed to spend enough money to lower the rate for this years filing, 2023 the Democrat Attorney General Dana Nessel ruled that the reduction from 4.25% to 4.05% would only be for the one year, with a return to 4.25% in 2024. The legislature did not intend for that to happen, but in a twisted take on Will Rogers, Democrats never met a tax increase they didn't like.

    3. Same with Washington and I suspect many states. The only state I have heard that does well with their lottery is Georgia (I believe) which they truly do reinvest into education and also giving incentives to people to stay in the state, go to school and work there.

That, and receiving the winnings (wages/income) while collecting.

I guess that what has to happen is the minute you win, you have to take yourself off benefits.

    1. I've only drawn unemployment once in my life, but I do remember I had to declare any and all income I brought in during that period which the State would've deducted from my next check.

  4. State Lotteries are a voluntary tax for the mathematically inept. Payback to the players is 50 to 60%: way worse than a casino.

  6. One of the saddest ever experiences i witnessed was a small boy at a gas station begging his mother to not buy scratch offs and buy bread. She shussed him. I slipped him a fiver and told him to come back w his friends and get the bread. Broke my heart to watch that go down.
