My hopes are that they weren't home when the fire struck, and the dog was able to find safety. Then, be able to locate home in a completely different landscape. However, with people being what they are these days....this comment removed by the author..
I wonder what the back story is. It's always impressive how evil people can be. I lived in Las Vegas when the MGM Grand burned in 1980 or 81. One story involved how a family tried to use the elevator to escape. The elevator was full so the parents shoved their 8 year old son out. Their thought was better for the son to burn and them to live. Everyone in the elevator died. The boy lived - - with the knowledge that his parents tried to kill him.
It could be the pooch ran off. Sense of urgency, maybe sirens, smoke. That can spook a dog. They had to leave in a hurry.
What I think amazing is bowser knew where to return. I doubt it was by scent since it looks like much of the place got torched. Somehow he knew this is the place.
This happened after the Camp Fire in 2018, the fire that destroyed the town of Paradise and killed 85 people. Many had to run for their lives. After evacuating people were lucky to be able to return home after a month. Some people weren't allowed back in for months. If I remember right this guy's owner was able to get back in after several weeks when a rescue operation found him at his house waiting. They had been leaving food out in hopes that surviving dogs could stay alive until their owners were allowed back in by the sheriff's department. He was one lucky pup to survive without injury.
Have any of you with the negative vibe ever tried to catch a running, scared-stupid dog? With a wildfire licking at your heels? Not all doggos are trained to a military level of discipline. "Mom and Dad are in panic mode, ohshitohshitohshit..." Yeah, if the leash isn't already on...
This is why my dog gets his leash put on before we get in the truck to head to the ranch. If the leash isn't on before you need it to be, it's never going on.
There was one case, family had a small herd of goats and a dog to protect them. He ran off with the goats instead of coming to the truck and they had to leave.
God knows where he took the goats, but when they came back there was he and the herd.
Read something similar, maybe Napa fire, family trying to evacuate dogs, goats etc., Got many of them, but this one dog vanished with part of the heard... they feared complete loss. Good Dog kept them safe until his humans came back.
We finally got relocated to the Ozarks and went to go get a rescue pooch from the county pound to keep an eye on the lovely bride while I'm working away from home. Got a mostly spastic lab/border that knew sit, good girl, and bad girl. We put a little brass bell on a strip of spring steel next to the door and she picked up ringing it to go outside in a week. She doesn't allow anyone on the property unless she has seen us talk to them regularly, and then only just past the gate. She makes sure that we know it's her place, and strangers aren't welcome. She's filled out to 65 pounds of intimidating love and protection.
Last year we went to go find her a friend to keep her company and rescued a little black mouth cur that someone was surrendering. He watched her like a hawk to learn all the rules, and she corrected his behaviors with almost obsessive enthusiasm. He had the potty bell down in days.
The second week we had him, we left for our morning walk at 0500 and were probably a half mile into it when he pulled to the end of his lead and got sideways in front of us and wouldn't move. Next thing I know I see him 4' in the air biting down on a 30" copperhead that is hanging off his front leg.
He spent the next 6 months milking that snake bite for all the attention and privileges he could get. Only been with us 2 weeks and made sure we knew that he was gonna protect his new pack no matter what.

He still gets lap privileges before bed.
