Well, she asked for my help

Lisa's been raiding thrift stores and hitting yard sales for old decanters for the past year or so and she told me a couple weeks ago she finally had enough to put all of our whiskeys in, despite my objections that my bourbon already comes in fine decanters.
Last week I went shopping and when I came back, she had transferred most of the bourbon. Only problem is, she doesn't see well enough to write out the little tags to go around the necks so we'd know which is which. She left that for me.
Now if I were her, I'd have poured it into its new home and then put the empty bottle in front of the decanter to make it easier to keep track of. She ain't me. She looked me dead off in the eye and says "You can tell the difference between them by taste, right?" We're talking Four Roses, Larceny, Maker's Mark, Evan Williams, Old Forester 1910 and Buffalo Trace here.
Well, I can give it my best shot. I had to take several samples of each one before I got it right. Leave it to my loving wife to turn a mundane task into a fun afternoon. What she didn't know and I didn't tell her is that I drink so little any more that I can tell which is which just by how full the bottles were. Some of them I've had for a couple years. Hell, I hadn't even opened the bottle of 1910 yet and it's 2-3 years old.

  1. Makers Mark is easy to distinguish, but the others may be problematic.

    1. The Old Forester hadn't even been opened yet, so that was easy - it was in the fullest decanter. Larceny and Maker's Mark are wheater bourbons but the Larceny is a little darker than Maker's Mark, so that was easy. The Four Roses, Buffalo Trace and Evan Williams all have distinctive tastes.
Again, I knew how much was in each bottle, so I really could've done it without sampling.

  6. This sounds like the potions logic puzzle at the end of the first Harry Potter book. Book, not movie.

    1. We haven't had a TV in years and years. The last one we had was a picture tube TV if that gives any indication how long ago it was.

  8. This reminds me of stuff I would do it's so funny. I scrubbed cast iron frying pans before I knew better. Story brought a smile to my face. Lisa probably is still giggling.

  9. Decanters are often made with leaded crystal.
Liquor shouldn’t be stored in them. Especially when it’s stored for a long time - which with your minimal drinking - would make that a given.
Unless you like ingesting lead then have at it.

    1. I don't think they're old, just used. They're all lighter than they look.

  10. When I was working in NJ back in the last century, I had a housemate who said he could tell one Scotch from another. We bought one each JB, some other, I forget, and a bottle of A&P store brand. He got them all wrong.

    1. I watch the occasional youtube bourbon channels and get a kick out of some of them, actually most of them, when they talk about all the 'notes' they pick up in a single sip - caramel, cinnamon, other assorted baking spices, citrus, etc.
Not me. I can taste a hint of caramel in Larceny, but that's about it. Other than that, it tastes like a smooth bourbon. The others I mentioned, I can taste the differences in them but I can't tell you what the differences are.

  11. I rarely drink Bourbon. I prefer Rye Whiskey or Scotch Whisky. About 7 years ago I went to a wake. My friend that passed had a couple of cases of 15 year old Pappy Van Winkle. A couple of bottles were opened but the newly widowed wife insisted we all take a bottle home. It has been sitting at the back of my liquor cabinet gathering dust.

  13. well, if it makes you feel any better, I have a few bottles of good scotch that are collecting dust big time here. a few of the are unopened as well, although I did crack the seal on the 18 year old Macellan last year. smooth. had one bottle of 30 year old stuff, a gift from a friend with
a lot more money than me. it sat for 10 or more years until I blew out my back. I drank everything in the house trying to numb the pain. the sad part is I don't even remember how it tasted, I did keep the really nice oak box it came in though. dave in pa.

  14. Makers mark and buffalo trace could be mixed together and used to clean the carburetor on your lawn mower, thats about all they're good for. Blechh!!
Get some single malt for Gods sake.
And I know you love the girl, but if my wife ever opened an un-opened bottle of hooch just to pour it into a different bottle I'd have to knock her over the head with it!

    1. I feel the same way about scotch that you do about bourbon.

    2. I love how scotch drinkers go around telling others how your choice of drink is crap and only some smoky peat however old bullshit is worth drinking....
News flash dude, lots of us have tried it and have dismissed the nonsense that comes from people like you..

    3. My dad was a scotch drinker, so I got an early introduction to it.
I don't care for butterscotch candy and that's all I can taste when I drink scotch, I don't care how good or expensive it is.
Everybody's got different tastes. To each his own.

    4. Buddy of mine's dad is a scotch drinker and he has encouraged me to try a several over the years...... To each their own but I haven't tried a scotch yet that I enjoy... Mr Tim though isn't a guy to tell anyone you're drinking carburetor cleaner if you enjoy something else.. That's my complaint about "some" people
Personally I enjoy Jameson with a couple of ice cubes but I also keep Bourbon, Sour Mash, a good Vodka and a bottle or two of a nice red wine for "those people" to suit their tastes...

    5. I just don't get the hype on a lot of the different brands of Scotch.
Or bourbons, for that matter. I have no desire to spend hundreds of dollars for a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle or any other kind of whiskey.
      Again, to each their own.

    6. You should try Laphroaig some time.
Don't do it before you eat though, you won't taste your food.
Very peaty, reminiscent of burning trash.
