The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike conducted by the Imperial Japanese Navy against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, in the United States Territory of Hawaii, on the morning of December 7, 1941 (December 8 in Japan). The attack led to the United States' entry into World War II.

ReplyDeleteMakes me wish we had dropped more of the big bombs. As far as I'm concerned had the entire population been annihilated that would have been just fine. What they did was cowardly and a cheap shot.

DeleteMuch of what we "know" about history isn't always accurate. I don't know that Stinnet's arguments in "Day of Deceit" are correct, but I do know that Japan didn't just go to war for no reason at all.

DeleteNot much has changed in warfare, you use the element of surprise to take out the easy targets . Don't get me wrong, I was on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1966 - 1987. We heared the stories which always ended with, "Never Again."
ReplyDeleteIn the end, even if they attacked on Monday it would not have affected the outcome by much. IJN doctrine was to go for the quick win so they ignored all the things that ended up destroying the IJN and the Japanese Merchant Marine: The shipyard, the fuel stores, Pacific Fleet HQ with the code breakers, and the entire submarine base. Not having to send the Yorktown all the way back to Puget Sound for repairs meant she was still in the fight at Midway, where we broke the back of IJN naval aviation.
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather told me a story about being part of the PBY flight that was flying to Pearl from San Diego that morning and being jumped by a couple of Zeros. When they were cleaning up the wreckage of the Japanese planes he cut off part of the red Rising Sun from the wing. My uncle, his oldest Don, passed that on to me this past Thanksgiving when he came to visit.

ReplyDeleteKnew a man in the Army who was there. Said he was on guard duty that morning, and slept at his post in the early hours. He said they weren’t prepared for what happened.
