CA travelers encouraged to download driver's license on phone before flying this holiday season

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The Transportation Security Administration is working to make sure end-of-year travel goes smoothly for everyone in the coming weeks.

"That's new this holiday season, we're encouraging people to do it and try it out, I think they're going to like it," Dankers said. "Here's why we like it, one less thing that travelers have to do, makes things go quicker and so instead of looking for that ID in your pocket or purse, everybody knows where their phone is at any moment.

They know where their phones are but not their driver's licenses? Shit, I can tell you where my license is at any given moment - in my wallet in my back pocket. My truck phone, though? I can't tell you the last time I've seen it.

  1. The heavy reliance on Cell Phone is not good. I mean, you loose your phone, it goes dead (happened to me at the Gate), things happen. Of course I am not of the generation that believes that tech is always there.

    1. I got a text message from a friend last Friday that read " hey, I lost my phone, can you call me so I can find it?"

  2. Download the license to your phone? OK, I'm gonna have to do a Field Expedient Modification. Tear my rotary wall phone off the kitchen wall and tape my driver license to it.

  3. I've been told around election time that having an ID is whacis because blacks are not smart enough to get one. So how are blacks that don't have an ID going to put it on their cellphone?

  4. I worried if my wallet got lost or stolen while flying, so i carry my passport as a backup ID to get back home. I guess this is the same thing.

  5. Having your DL on your phone is same as your car insurance on your phone. A really dumb idea. Do you really want to hand a government employee your unlocked phone? I don't and won't.

    1. If you attach a voter ID to the smart phone ID then I get a free smart phone. If I can not afford a phone, and one is needed to carry an ID for voting, then the cost of the phone becomes a sort of "poll tax." Can't be taxed for voting, so I guess somebody else has to buy me a phone.

Is it easier to hack a phone than it is to rig an election with fake printed ballots?

  8. I had a smartphone. My daughter had a flip phone, in case we needed to get ahold of her while we were out.
Just this weekend I switched with her. I now have the flip phone and she has the smartphone. I found that the smartphone was just too much of a hindrance to my life. I was always checking to see the weather or to see if the world had ended and no one told me.
I feel much less stress already. Maybe the world did end, and now I am alone in the quiet. One can only hope.

  9. so, when you show your license-on-phone, you are basically giving an open phone to the cops for them to search..
