Feds take first step toward requiring new vehicles to prevent drunk, impaired driving
DETROIT (AP) — U.S. auto safety regulators say they have taken the first step toward requiring devices in vehicles that prevent drunk or impaired driving.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Tuesday that it is starting the process to put a new federal safety standard in place requiring the technology in all new passenger vehicles.
What percentage of people on the road, are driving drunk? I notice they don't say 'drunk', they say 'impaired'. But: Is it 50%? 20%? 1%? Less than 1%? I'm guessing it's less than 1%. So, we're all, 100% of us, supposed to buy & maintain equipment that allows our car to run at all based on something less than 1% of drivers' bad behavior? And when this equipment breaks down, our car won't operate at all? Because 'we've got to have safety always, and the default is that it's always safer to not be moving at all....'
Is the hand sanitizer you use after shopping at the filthy WalMart going to prevent you from starting your car when you are stone sober? Inquiring minds want to know... CC
Instead of drunk driver detection systems they shoud mandate stupid driver detection systems. You can bet that'd save way more lives. PS:This statement was not directed at Asian & African women drivers.
“The group is researching technology that would automatically test a driver’s breath for alcohol and stop a vehicle from moving if the driver is impaired.” Better not use mouthwash either. My bottle of Listerine has 21%v/v alcohol in it. Would an Uber driver be able to haul 5 drunk chics home from the bachelorette party? Lots of alcohol in the air! Dear NHTSA, Go fuck yourself and the high, over-regulating horse you rode in on.
It will also be flammable. And hopefully fully electrical. Friends don't let neighbors choose to give aid, nor succor, to those that call them "enemy".
You know incompetent you have to be to get pulled over for drunk driving? The cops really don't want to deal with you if you're drunk or screwed up. Drunks get belligerent. They spout threats and verbal abuse, then invariably they want to fight. At some point, usually in the back seat of a police car, they throw up all over everything.
The real problem centers around poor driving skills. Take some number of busted DUI idiots and test out their driving skills when they're stone, cold sober. They're unsafe at any speed, have had a few non-fatal accidents in the past five years, yet they're out there on the highway anyhow.
It should be hard to get a driver's license, but the way things are set up in Ohio, any chimpanzee could qualify.
I had a DUI when I was 22. There were no threats or violence from me, matter of fact I had the cop laughing at my jokes as he took me to jail. Haven't had a ticket in over 30 years. Blows your fucking claims clean out of the water, doesn't it?
I got a "Criminal Mischief" charge for puking in the back of a cop car. Judge had a laugh and dismissed the charge. Even better do away with government permits to travel. The Founders would have hanged people over driver's licenses and car registrations. "Papiere, Bitte,"
I think texting is as, if not more, dangerous than drunk driving. Shit I've seen assholes on motorcycles texting. Somebody has two beers in one hour and drives. I'd rather have them on the road then a sober texter.
I hear what you're saying. Texting, phone talking, having to navigate your giant touch screen, none of that has ever been studied as far as I know as to how many deaths were caused. It's all about alcohol.
I'm not giving drunk driving a pass, but they need to think about other things too.
Worse than 'impared' drivers are those MFers on their cell phones. Most people can barely drive at a competent level. When you stick a phone in front of their face, fuggetabouit.
Next time you see a driver doing something stupid or dangerous, look for them farting around with their cell phone. I'll lay big money that says they are texting and driving.
Don't worry, the first time someone gets killed because they can't jump in their car, start it, and drive away from danger, they'll change it to a buzzer that you can replace with a resistor.
Ban automatics and mandate stick shifts. This will solve three problems: drunk driving, texting, and overcrowding the roads with incompetent drivers. Will also save gas.
What's that, you say? You don't actually want these problems solved? Carry on, then.
So, what's to stop a drunk person from asking a friend or passerby to blow in the test tube for him? They already have this technology today for chronically drunk people... it's an easy workaround.
At one point, you could not start your car if your seat belt was not fastened. That lasted about 2 or 3 years. I predict there will be such a backlash (car sales crash) that the mandate will be rescinded at some point. But, maybe not; there appear to be more sheep today and their sheer numbers may doom anybody that can string two coherent sentences together on the fly.
Someone will sell a pressurized bottle of fake human breath , there I solved it.

ReplyDeleteSomething doesn't make sense about this.
It makes perfect sense when you consider this is about power and control.
DeleteSafety? Bah.
Its control.
It makes complete sense when you realize that it isn't about safety. It's about control.

ReplyDeleteAnd I thought I was priced out of the new car market before...
ReplyDeleteNow you're gonna be priced out of the used car market too.

And yet they still refuse to have requirements all vehicles prevent cell phone use unless it is on hands free.
ReplyDeletePriorities.
It’ll be Hackable or a work around found.

Yet the law says you must ride your bike WITH traffic since no one ever veers out of their lane!

ReplyDeleteClearly, thinking anything the government determines to be "wrong think" is a sign of being "impaired" and your driving privileges will be revoked.

ReplyDeleteThis should not come as a surprise to anyone, after the Fedz got away with mandating the use of Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
DeleteHow long until speeding is considered "impaired" driving?
