States trashing tons of masks and pandemic gear as huge stockpiles linger and expire

When the coronavirus pandemic took hold in an unprepared U.S., states scrambled for masks and other protective gear.

Three years later, as the grips of the pandemic have loosened, many states are now trying to deal with an excess of protective gear, ditching their supplies in droves.

  1. Curious how do gowns, masks and gloves expire? Stored properly they should last quite a long time. Oops my bad, follow the money once again.

    2. Same with my clinic. Just received notice a few days ago. This is only in the oncology clinic. The Dr.'s offices in another building where the PCP is located are still mask free, but masks are encouraged there if you've an active case of the sniffles and sneezes.

    3. Yeah, UPMC. It's bad enough having lung cancer and the shortness of breath that comes with it and not making it worse with a mask.

    4. "but masks are encouraged there if you've an active case of the sniffles and sneezes." Unless they supply masks that are a whole lot better than anything I've seen since chemical warfare training, the masks won't contain my germs when I have sniffles and sneezes.

In the first place, the cloth or paper masks held on by straps around the ears or the back of the head will lift entirely off my face when I cough or sneeze. _Good_ straps will snap it back on my face afterwards, but the only particles they contain are glops of snot heavy enough to fly ballistically and stick to the mask. Any particles that go with the air flow are flying loose.

In the second place, none of those wire things for the bridge of the nose will hold tight enough on my high, narrow nose. I can feel air coming out under my eyes every time I exhale. It not only lets airborne germs out, but often fogs my glasses.

  3. Most weeks on GovDeals auction site there are pallets of hand cleaner up for auction. The supply seems unlimited.

    1. Remember, almost all industries switched to making hand cleaner just like tanks in WWII.

  5. Wasting money and throwing masks away?
There's a fix for that: start a new pandemic.

  6. The public treasury has already been looted and the paybacks made to the politicians' re-election campaign funds so the actual materials are no longer needed.

  7. Virtually everything made or sold in America has a "best by" or expiration date. That's because we have about a hundred times more lawyers than we need. And all of them looking for a reason to sue someone or some company so they can get rich. PPE equipment doesn't expire or lose effectiveness. But it does have a magical date on it that gives shysters an excuse to sue.
