But I can go anywhere! I have 4WD!

SACRAMENTO -- Three men off-roading in their trucks got stranded overnight, deep in the snow earlier this month in remote Placer County near Foresthill.

It happened on the night of Jan. 6 when Chris Rose, his stepson and friend Brian Carlon adventured past the China Wall as snow was moving in.

"By 1 p.m. or so, that's about when we got stuck. We tried to dig out for the next nine hours," Rose told CBS13. "It was a point of no return. The longer we were there trying to dig out, the more snow was building up."

  1. The difference between 2wd and 4wd is, when you finally get stuck with 4wd you are much farther from help.

  2. I know the area well. China Wall is on the Foresthill Divide road (paved), which after leaving Foresthill (3200') climbs up to Robinson Flat (6800'). It's a gradual climb almost all the way. There's no excuse for this, other than lack of experience and not paying a bit of attention to weather forecasts. Anyone with half a brain would have turned around and headed back to town as soon as it started getting dicey.

BTW, I always packed at least one set of chains with me if I was tramping around in the Sierra woods when I was a kid.

  3. Darwin approves, I've spent far too much time working Search and Rescue in NH White Mountains for tennis shoe hikers in the snow. I learned however even a "Dead Cellphone" can often be pinged and used to locate idiots.

  4. 4WD allows you to get stuck in a more inaccessible place...

  5. Wait until the sheriff sends them the bill. They'll be selling them trucks to pay.

  6. I wonder if we'll be seeing this on Matts Off Road Recovery?
