Hidden homeless caves dug into Tuolumne River bank in Modesto

MODESTO — Hidden homeless caves tucked along the Tuolumne River were cleared out by volunteer groups and the Modesto Police Department over the weekend.

Volunteers from Operation 9-2-99 and the Tuolumne River Trust partnered with the Modesto Police Department to clear out 7,600 pounds of trash. They also had two truckloads and a trailer of garbage that were removed from the area.

This is nothing new. Back around 2000 when I was helping my ex with her homeless advocacy work we found caves along the Tuolumne river and Dry Creek. I could point out on a map a half dozen spots where we found them.
How did we find them? Read the second paragraph above. Trash was everywhere. They refused to keep their caves any cleaner than their above ground camping spots.

  6. I thought they always just went down the road Professor Victor Davis Hanson lives on and threw their trash out there and then stole anything nice lying around like well pumps, lawn mowers or hoses.
