Regarding #2 Our local "first nations" band do this much better. They build a weir with a spot for their shopping cart. When the cart is full, 2 or 3 of them lift it out of the river then push it home on the road!
#5 is cute and all, but I think a lathe would handle the job much better. Or at least just as well, and other jobs too, without the specialized tooling for each step.
Hiker Mike: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWJx2DNPnYo Wasn't me, but the point stands. The part you're looking for starts at about 4:50, where he's turning the INSIDE of the bowl shape of the spoon. It's a spoon rather than a ladle, but that's just a matter of degree, really.
Anon@9:14 Made by hand with the appropriate tool is STILL made by hand, IMHO. There's no reason to do everything with your fingernails, after all.
Anon@9:34 Perhaps I should've said made with hand tools instead of saying by hand. I thought most people would've figured that out on their own given that it was a reply to somebody talking about using machinery, instead of the hand tools used in the gif.
#3 - something like this almost happened to me. I was cutting a dead limb on a tree in the yard using a pole saw, absolutely didn't see the branch it was supporting. I was very glad my wife, the occupational health and safety queen, made me wear a hard hat and face shield.
It may be sharp, but that wood cannot be that hard if you're able to do that with wrist action. If the wood isn't hard, what good is a balsa wood bowl?

#7 needs to throw a load of firewood in the bed. You.can blow all the smoke you want but you gotta have the ass to back it up
ReplyDeletewhat kinda death wish shit is #10?
ReplyDeleteI think the actual name is the ring of death.
DeleteNot to be confused with a wedding ring.

#5 it appears the person is making some kind of ladle note the outline of a handle to the left. Lets see you do that on a lathe.

Sorry, but I'd much rather have something made by hand than by a piece of machinery.

DeleteKnew a teacher caught a tree with her back.....Not good.
DeleteHand carved Kuska. Not the same as a CNC lathe.... Just not ðŸ¤
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Mr. Do-It-Yourself Snag Faller survived his experience.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't sell him insurance. Might visit his widow if she's cute.
DeleteI'd guess not, but if he did, he left on a stretcher.
Delete#5 looks eerily like the tool they scraped bone from my hip with during surgery.
ReplyDeleteGlad they washed it off for this segment.
DeleteA curved knife works for bowls, plates, and spoons. And fits in your pocket. Not so much with a lathe.
ReplyDeleteDid that guy in # 3 survive??? :-0

ReplyDelete#5, that is one very sharp blade.
ReplyDeleteVery fine tool.

DeleteThis tool is called a scorp. Larger, two
Deletehandled ones were used for many things
