Full-Time Work Is Being Replaced by Part-Time Jobs as Americans and Businesses Struggle

Since June 2023, Americans have been increasingly employed in part-time positions, with a subsequent decline in full-time work, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The number of Americans working part-time in January grew by 96,000 compared to the previous month, while full-time employment sank by 63,000, according to the BLS. The change in the types of employment follows a trend toward part-time employment that has been increasingly exacerbated since June 2023.

  1. There is also the Obamacare requirement to fund Obamacare for "full-time" workers. So businesses make sure the hours are under the Obamacare cutoff so they don't have to pay the huge cost. Workers then become multiple "part-time" employees to earn their living.

  2. Soon it'll be only the Millionaire CEOs & part time workers and contractors meaning NO benefits for the drones. The Company I hired on to 60 years ago where I worked with conditions like 40 hrs. a week, got time & a half for O.T. got 2 weeks paid vacation after 6 months, then 3 weeks paid vacation after 5 years, 4 weeks paid vacation after 15 years, personal paid days and Holidays off. In addition I got company paid medical insurance, and dental insurance + a company matching 401 savings plan and a retirement package that included a monthly payout, company paid medical and dental insurance for life. Maybe I’m just old fashion and I’m not seeing something good in the “modern” way of working, but I’m doing OK

  3. Hey Bogside, since the late 80’s early 90’s there is nothing good that comes out of working for corporations. I went from a good salary, benefits paid for and 6% match 401k. In early to mid 90’s my salary didn’t rise, benefits became 50% employee pays and the 402k match was dropped to 4%. Mid 90’s to early 2000’s I had been laid off 3 times. Lost benefits and to make the bills had to cash in 401k. I’ve been at my current employer since 2014 and now make what I did in the late 90’s, I have no benefits (can’t afford it), and have absolutely zero savings. One of the positives during all this is I made sure our mortgage was paid, all bills paid and we always had food. I’m surprised my wife didn’t run away during all the hiccups but she’s stayed with me now for 36 years. She must be as crazy as I am.

  4. Antoni knows his stuff. Don’t remember where I read it, but an even deeper dive into the report showed that all the new jobs that have been added in the last 5+ years have gone to immigrants, as opposed to natural born Americans. Might be B.S. Might be accurate. Just stirring the pot.
