No telling how many times in years past, I'd see an old car parked behind a barn, or in a field, or beside a house, covered in junk, weeds growing up around it. But it'd be something classic, maybe a 50's model Chevy truck, or an old 60's muscle car. I'd stop, knock on the door, and politely ask if it was for sale and offer to buy it. Each and every time I was told nope, not for sale, I'm a-going restore it one day. 10 years later it'd still be sitting there, even more rusted and dilapidated, sometimes with a fricking tree growing thru it. But boy-howdy they still ain't going sell it, got plans to restore it one day.
It might not be all that old. The pic is from Britain where it's still legal to buy and use them. You can buy new ones here, but scroll down and read "US regulations" first https://www.jerrycan.com/shop/5-gallon-20-liter-olive-drab-metal-gelg-jerry-can/ Al_in_Ottawa
Back in the 90's, a neighbor had what another neighbor called a "Poor-man's GTO". It was a '66 Le Mans 2-door, 326. I asked if he wanted to sell it but he said he was saving it for his son. Eventually, he bought the son a Camaro and had the Le Mans hauled off.
I always wanted a Porsche, you ask them, what would you take for it? I’m going to fix it up soon. 4 years later it’s still in the same spot with more weeds and scrub.,
My brother stored my Dads partially restored 65 Chevelle SS L79 outside with the windows down and uncovered. Full of leaves and 2 inches on water. It was all could do not to throttle him.
I used to work with a guy who picked up a really old Porsche for next to nothing, and spent a good long time fixing it up. It's so strange how some people look at you differently when you drive up in a "nice" car even when it's not actually that nice.
Just another poor farmer's yard. He bought the Range Rover because he could not get a heiffer into the back of the Porche. As for the Smart car? Heiffer would not fit either.

ReplyDeleteIn addition, you look at where they live - they don't even have a matching socket set, let alone a decent shop to even "restore" a lawnmower.
DeleteIs that a... a.. uh... vintage jerrycan? I'd be all over that for a restoration project!

ReplyDeleteSorry, I forgot to say that the guy brought the Le Mans home when his mother died and parked it.

ReplyDeleteThe engine hasn't been stolen, wow...

Dude, that's my treasure pile!
ReplyDeleteAt least the windows appear to be closed. More often than not they park an old car outside and leave the windows down. I want the Smart.

Man, that was back when they were still over-steering, tail-happy cars. I always wanted one though...
ReplyDeleteI remember we called them whale tails
