Striking gold or striking out? Final hearing on reopening of Nevada County mine continued to Friday

NEVADA CITY — Will mining company Rise Gold Corp. strike gold or strike out in their controversial bid to reopen a historic gold mine in Nevada County? The community should have its long-awaited answer on Friday.

The final hearing to decide if the Nevada County Board of Supervisors will accept Rise Gold's petition to reopen the Idaho-Maryland mine and certify the environmental impact report (EIR) first started at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Yeah, fuck all those jobs, not only in the mine itself but all the businesses that will support it.
And this is from a town that owes its very existence to mining.

  1. Surpringly, I didn't see one protestor with his/her, they/them, she/it's pet spotted owl on their shoulder in the video of the council meeting. "Will we stay, or where are we to go?" By all means, stay in Kommiefornica, preferably west of the Sierras', and south of Santa Barbara.

  2. I’m sure all the people opposed to the mine will be equally strident in their opposition to EVs since the mines needed for those batteries are way worse.

  3. It's not just that they move in and vote Lib, it's that they don't like the way we live and so they run for County Commission, school boards and such. What the natives want is to be left alone don't want to mind other peoples business.

  4. People against mining should be required to spend 48 hours living without the products of mining. My guess is that 99.9% wouldn't make past the first 24.

  5. "And this is from a town that owes its very existence to mining."

A town that never experienced the Great Depression, courtesy of the jobs provided by the mining industry. Grass Valley and Nevada City both sailed right along as though it never happened, because to them it didn't.

It's remarkable. To the newcomers, the mining and timber industries are both evil incarnate. Yet they all want to retire to a place that has been mined and logged for more than a hundred years.

"Rise Gold’s application to reopen the Idaho-Maryland mine has fallen flat. The Nevada County Board of Supervisors, by a unanimous 5-0 vote, decided to not certify the Final Environmental Impact Report, deny the rezone and use permits and variances requested."

  7. They've been trying to re-open that mine for decades. Cost is higher than ore value.

    1. That's not true. Rise has the exploratory core samples to prove it. They've shown them to both the county and the NIMBY public and it makes no difference to them.

Then there's the fact that the city people who oppose the reopening have absolutely no idea what they're looking at when they're looking at high-grade core samples. They're clueless.

Rise has already spent millions on this attempt to reopen the mine. They wouldn't have done that unless they knew they'd get a great return on investment.
