Darwin, California

Darwin was named after Dr. Darwin French who led an expedition to the area in 1860 and discovered silver at Coso, nine miles from the Darwin site.

Silver was discovered at Darwin in 1874, the same year that the boom to Panamint City occurred nearby in the Panamint range. Darwin's rush was not as frenzied as the rush to Panamint, but by 1875 Darwin was still a sizeable camp with over 700 residents.

  1. I wonder if the Darwin Store charged admission. :-)
    Great story. Thanks.

  2. I went through there about 10 years ago, that town is really run down. A few dozen people left clinging to a dead mine hoping it would produce again.

Starting about 100 yards from the nearest building a perimeter fence was put up. Boulders were put on all but one road leading to the mine and all the old buildings. The lone road in to the mine was gated and you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting a “NO TRESPASSING” sign. I didn’t stick around long.
