We all know it shouldn't happen but it does. I've let a lot of turkeys live trying to make a "textbook" shot. So, I am certain of the target before pulling the trigger. My philosophy is, if someone is in the background in open timber, either the turkey wouldn't be there or the supposed person would have already shot. I have been close to other hunters in late spring when thick foliage limits sight and while both of us were trying to kill the same bird. As soon as I determine I'm not the only hunter in the woods, I whistle like a bobwhite and if I don't get a clear "ping back", I have called out in an audible voice. I'd hate to shoot someone and for sure don't want shot.
had bullets wiz past my head...bunch of flatlanders came to the mountains for elk...saw a small heard...and just started blasting away...stalk you ask? fuck no. they were so out of breath or hung over that they saw movement and opened fire without checking to see if downrange was clear....and i was wearing blaze orange....lesson learned...flatlanders around...avoid Will Robinson...avoid...
I remember a few decades ago hearing that Turkey hunting was the most dangerous type of hunting. It was because people hide behind shit and do Turkey calls. Other hunters shoot the hiding Turkey.
No descriptions, so we know the group (again).
ReplyDeleteNot sure how many brothers are out hunting turkeys.
DeleteWell that doesn't sound good
ReplyDeleteHow do you not know that you’re shooting at a person and not a turkey?
ReplyDeleteYou assume the turkey, and blast away.
DeleteHence why I don't hunt turkeys anymore.
DeleteNothing scarier than calling, then having someone stalking your call. BTDT - Never went again!

ReplyDeleteYep, my childhood barber was blasted away by his own son. I’m sure he was never the same after that.

This why I don't hunt public land.
