Uber and Lyft in Minneapolis: Ride-hailing apps say May 1 will be final day

After the Minneapolis City Council voted 10-3 to override Mayor Jacob Frey's veto of a ride-hailing pay raise ordinance on Thursday, Uber says it will pull out of the entire Twin Cities metro starting May 1.

In a statement Thursday afternoon, Uber wrote: "We are disappointed the Council chose to ignore the data and kick Uber out of the Twin Cities, putting 10,000 people out of work and leaving many stranded. But we know that by working together with all stakeholders - drivers, riders and state leaders - we can achieve comprehensive statewide legislation that guarantees drivers a fair minimum wage, protects their independence and keeps rideshare affordable."

  1. The first law of economics is, scarcity is real; the first law of politics is, ignore the first law of economics.

  2. If the money wasn't worth the time, they would have no drivers. They had drivers, so clearly they were paid enough.

  3. All one has to see are the articles at PowerLine blog to understand that Minneapolis is One. Fucked. Up. City. Saint Floyd only made it worse. Somalians have compounded the problems. Elected officials there are democrats first, last, and always. It’s truly sad that the populations of Hennepin and Ramsey Counties dictate the politics of the state. Certainly that’s how that dumbass Ilhan Omar got elected.

    1. All the midwest states are like Somalifornia Norté with a big city or three voting in crazy shit. 3.7 out of 5.7 million people and you get this shit.

Michigan has the Detoilet and Lansing Messro areas, Wisconsin has Milwaukee and Madison, Illinois has Chicago, Indianapolis, Bismark, Rapid City, Omaha, Des Moines, they all have the majority of populations in the states.

Good news is they're all vaxxed and boosted to the max, at least the soft donut around the dark core of most of these bungholes.

Nobody there is ready to do anything but panic and loot when either EBT, the internet, GPS or the power goes out...

    2. Sioux Falls in South Dakota is bigger than Rapid City... just so you know MN Steel.

    3. I live in the Black Hills, just west of Rapid City. Pennington County, in which Rapid (as it’s called by locals) is located, has majority-voted for the Republican presidential candidate since 1940, with exception of the 1964 election. This area is heavy-conservative and especially appreciative of the military. Ellsworth AFB, just E of Rapid in Box Elder, houses the 28th Bomb Wing, now flying B-1Bs, but will soon get the new Stealth Bomber, the B-21, as an operational AND training base, which is bringing in lots of new residents. Hopefully the new folks will continue N Plains politics. Sioux Falls, in Minnehaha County on the eastern side of the state, tends to be more liberal, and, sadly, is the most populous county in the state. Pennington is the second-most populous county, but is the third largest by area. After retirement, I moved here from an eastern state with ~40,000 sq mil and ten times SoDak’s population. Oh, SoDak is 77,000 sq mil. Easy math.

  4. And once again the political intelligentsia are forced to learn that most basic of economic laws:

The true minimum wage is always ZERO.

It continues to amaze me that these stupid bastard politicians don't understand cause and effect.
