That Old Confidence

Last year, just before Christmas, I was reading a book on the Cold War, and I remember being impressed by the ability and confidence of America’s leaders—men who safely navigated the nation through one of the most dangerous periods in its history. Decades later the United States finds itself on the cusp of yet another treacherous period, but this time our leaders appear woefully inadequate, with that old postwar confidence replaced by a toxic hubris.

The situation here at home may be even more dire. While the counterculture of the 1960s helped to break a president and accelerate social divisions, the old political consensus that carried the nation through World War II remained mostly intact, continuing on until the end of the Cold War.

  1. 50 years of higher ed telling kids that the USA is the worst country in the world, even though all other countries have populations that want to come here, is taking a toll.

You cannot lead and organization to a better future unless you are proud of the current condition.

  2. How can anyone complain? The current president is a lifelong dimwitted crook. His Democrat Party predecessor was a celebrity infatuated sportsball addict. Could our govt. be any more representative of the people? The culmination of "if it feels good do it" Boomer** culture? Sure, in between we managed to get an outsider elected, but he was unable to change it. Corruption is embedded in the people and our rulers are only a reflection.

**I'm a Boomer, get defensive if you want but I've witnessed the depravity my entire life.

  3. Dear WiscoDave: I dont believe you are fully red-pilled. After many years of research I have reconstructed my dads WWII service and imprisonment by the Germans during WWII. I am convinced there was as much lying and deception of the servicemen and Americans back home as there is today.

    1. Wisco didn't write that article, ya numbskull. He just submitted it like he does with several others every single day.
