Colorado Signs Bill Requiring Credit Card Tracking of Gun and Ammo Purchases

Democrat Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has signed legislation that will require credit card companies to track purchases of firearms and ammunition with credit cards, a scheme opposed by Second Amendment activists and organizations as backdoor gun registration.

According to KDVR News in Denver, which labeled gun control proponents as “gun reform advocates,” the bill requires credit card companies to “apply a specific code” to such purchases. This “merchant category code” was pushed by state Sen. Tom Sullivan, a Democrat whose son was killed in the Aurora theater rampage. He was joined by state Reps, Javier Mabrey and Meg Froelich.

    1. Nothing at all, go to your bank withdraw cash, purchase a visa gift card. There is always a work around. Watching a video on prohibition last night, alcohol consuption went up during it.

    2. That was my thought too. Have your FFL "Bob's Guns", and have a second company "Bob's Gift Cards". Get a credit card terminal owned by "Bob's Gift Cards". When someone wants to buy a gun on a credit card, they get a gift card (not a Visa or MasterCard gift card--but some sort of in-house gift card), and then use the gift card to buy whatever gun you want.

      Or just pay in cash.

  4. I guess we all know, or should know, that NONE of this gun harassment is about fighting crime or controlling violence. It's about identifying and cataloging gun owners so that they can be set up for targeting later. Act accordingly.

    1. the FFLs will track you, but pay with cash. it's one less lead, evidence or paper trail for them to follow and harass you. do it legal, but cover your tracks AMAP.
there is a you tube video of a man who had a diesel repair shop and ordered a case of fuel filters and the ATF showed up at his door thinking they were for silencers. crazy.

  6. Hmm. So if your CC company is not based in Colorado, and your purchase was out of state (on line) just how do they enforce that?

That I don't know That answer doesn't diminish the importance of What it Means that They want the ability to use my exercise of my rights to hurt me.

    1. Simple, the same way the FedGov under Obama and Biden has access to what you purchase. The credit card companys/banks give the info to the state willingly.

  8. Leaving aside the workarounds (eg, pay cash or use a card not associated with your name) there are a number of states that specifically prohibit this, eg Utah and Tennessee.Twenty seven state attorneys general have taken a position against the mandate, though not all have passed statutory prohibition. I'd guess that the credit card companies have two bad choices- refuse to process credit transactions from gun/ammo sellers in Colorado, or establish a code but not allow its use in states with a statutory prohibition and hope that simply not using it won't expose them to the penalties (hint- it does, at least in Utah, because the statute says 'shall not establish a code'- not won't use it, won't have it). Should be interesting.

  10. Amendment 64 was the death nail for Colorado. Been swirling the drain ever since. And so is the legal cannabis business: https://tax.colorado.gov/average-market-rate. Electricity, taxes and rent are sky high and the .gov is going to really screw the legal market over with rescheduling.
