It's not an exaggeration to say that cars are getting more advanced with each model year. From infotainment growth to semi-autonomous driving technology, manufacturers are adding features in each cycle, and often charging for them too.
However, automated emergency braking systems will be a federally mandated standard . . . by 2029. Following the finalization of a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is announcing the new safety standard for all passenger cars and light trucks by September 2029.

It doesn't make any difference. I don't see myself buying any car as new as 2029 in my lifetime. I currently have a Chevy mini van that is a 2002 with 130,000 miles on it, and a 2009 Pontiac with 139,000 miles on it.

ReplyDeleteNHTSA must be picking from the same box of rocks as the appliance mandate guys for their brain. He come some pile-ups. Someone cuts you off, animal, road debri. On and on. And you wont be able to run over your in-laws if it detects them.
ReplyDeleteA lot of car jackers already know which models have that as standard equipment and specifically target them. There have been reports of gangs running out into the street holding up a stretched out tarp or blanket in order to get the car to automatically stop so that they can rob the occupants.

ReplyDeleteACC is one of the worst "advancements" so far. Lots of brain dead people using it in the left lane and won't get over. The only way around is on the right. When I find one of these folk I sometimes will toy with them. Once I get past them I'll never let them get back ahead. If they get close I will change lanes and they will automatically fall back.
DeleteAutomatic bright lights suck too. And touch screens are a big distraction but people keep wanting those to be larger.
The one feature I'd support would be a localized cell phone jammer that is on if the car is in motion.

ReplyDeleteMy little car has it when using the adaptive cruise control. Mostly, its okay except for little things like going from a two lane to a four lane road. Somebody slower in front of you that you intend to pass and it thinks you're going to hit them and it slams on the brakes. Really annoying, especially if the guy behind you had the same plan. But, it will damn near drive itself home without much input from me, which is pretty nice when driving at night. I don't think the government should have the power to mandate shit, though. Eod1sg Ret

The company my brother drives for bought some new trucks with automatic brakes. Somebody passed him, then cut back in front, automatic brakes came on, load shifted and he got a $700 ticket at the next scale for too much weight on the drivers. Not sure what he was hauling, grain, I think.

ReplyDeleteMy buddy bought a VW ID5 and had to block the camera lens, otherwise it slams the brakes on and will fight you if you try to cross a solid line to avoid road works.

Mt wife's car has that, still optional in that it can be turned off. It has never actually helped in the 10 years we've owned the car, but it has on numerous occasions falsely activated and randomly slammed on the brakes hard enough to throw us forward and lock the seatbelt mechanism, usually over someone on a side street. The adaptive cruise control sucks too. I'll set it to maybe 5 over the limit, we'll cruise for a while, and then realize we're stuck behind some bozo going 10 under. The ACC slows so gradually you don't notice it and before long there's a long line of cars barely moving down the highway. I'm thinking there'll be a active secondary market to re-flash the computer chips and remove shit like that. Already is for some vehicles today.

The automatic emergency braking will ripple back along the line of cars before the second cars electronic brain realises that the first car has gone and itself accelerates. Repeat.
