#1 At some point in the early 80's I'd seen something about pulling a truck tire innertube behind a boat. So, we went and got an old tube and from then on it was utter carnage. One guy lost 2 front teeth, one was knocked unconscious (life vest came in handy) and I myself had at least 3 concussions after 1 summer. Learned a few lessons, put the stem to the back and down as it hurts bad. Wear old pants and a long sleave shirt or the rubber burns will kill you and the clothes help you stay on the tube (might not have been an advantage in the end) and whatever you do, try to land on your back. It really lessons the impact. Later on we figured the boat going 33 mph and the rope distance and the turn radius and we must have hit 70mph many times. It's amazing no one was seriously hurt doing this. I have to say, seeing a person skipping across the water like a rock thrown from Nolan Ryan was quite funny. Glad there were no video cameras then, though the highlights would make $$ on youtube.
We did the innertube thing all through my childhood, never got hurt. Bounced off a few times. Ran the boat around 25 mph or so, but learned to do the whip thing where the driver would crank hard on the wheel, do a 180 degree turn, and then straighten out. The guy on the innertube would slingshot around and pull up even with the boat, as long as he didn't bounce off while crossing the wake. Yeah, you gotta watch out for the valve stem, and be careful how you tie the rope off, but otherwise easy-peasy.
