For years, dollar stores were a fixture in nearly every strip mall in California, offering cheap household goods, bread and produce, and even toys and gifts.
But if it seems like your favorite dollar store is heading for the exit, you’re not wrong.
2024 may be their swan song.
Dollar General is different from the run of the mill dollar stores & they seem to be doing well.
ReplyDeleteSort of like Five & Dime stores? It's almost as though one might look at history for what happens in this type of business model.
ReplyDeleteAt least the Woolworth five & dime stores had dining counters where you could get great milk shakes back in my day. No they didn't have hitching posts in the front.
DeleteThey also had popcorn, red candied apples, hamsters, and every model airplane you could image, and they smelled wonderful.
DeleteDollar stores in CA should close. You can walk out with a couple carts before coming close to that $900 stealing limit.

ReplyDeleteI’ll second the comment about Dollar General. They are the closest store to us, in any direction. The variety is decent and the prices are fair. I don’t feel like I’m being gouged and they usually have what I need, although it might not be the specific brand I wanted.
ReplyDeleteThey also have seasonal items and what nots. I’m happy that there’s one right up the road from us.
Sears anchored the nearby shopping mall for over 60 years. Gone now.
ReplyDeleteDicks opened at the same mall, promptly went "woke." Now going broke I reckon.

The 99c store around here closed recently.
Dollar General next door to my local Ace Hardware is still in business.
Though somewhat of a scum magnet, the Wally mart is thriving.
I avoid Home Depot unless absolutely necessary. (Prefer Lowe's.)
When grandkids come to spend a day I give each 10 bucks and we go to Dollar Tree. Every thing is a dollar quarter now but it's cheap entertainment for them
