Almost any place in the Conus that would be a really bad idea. For some reason my dad decided we needed wagons so for the next twenty years we had a succession of wagons. You could cook in the back of one of those. Wasn't till the 70's before air showed up in one of them.
Back in 1976 my dad had a black truck with a black camper shell and drove the southern route with us kids in the back from Bayonne NJ where he picked the truck up to California. It was all good until we hit North Carolina, then he had to start driving at night because sun was just too brutal.
The higher you go the cooler it gets. The P-38 lightning wasn't as well suited in the European theater as it was in the pacific. Because the engines were on the wings there was a lack of heat in the cockpit. In the pacific theater the pilots loved to get in there planes to escape the suffocating heat.
California? In Florida it'd be like driving around inside a popcorn popper.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, what incredible visibility. In modern cars, you can't see much, because of the head rests and the thick pillars.
ReplyDeleteBut on the other other hand, zero rollover protection.
DeleteWouldn't be funny if someone's hair was set on fire ?

ReplyDeleteThat would be a nightmare in Texas.
ReplyDeleteCentral California's heat ain't no slouch either.
DeleteLet's not leave Redding and Red Bluff out of this discussion, either.
DeleteTrue, their temps are usually 10 degrees or more higher than Stanislaus County's in the summer.

DeleteWonder what it's like in a P-51 Mustang? Although I imagine you had other things on your mind.
ReplyDeleteAt least in a P-51 you could climb up into the cold air.

It's all fun and games until you get stuck behind a gravel truck.
