Damn, that's pretty

A thief stole a gold nugget worth $82,100, and the Long Beach Police Department is asking for the public’s help in tracking down the culprit and recovering the precious metal.

In all the years I prospected, the biggest 'nuggets' I found were about the size of a match head.

  1. Insurance scam, most likely.

  2. There's enough Gold there to supply bling jewelry to the total pimp populations of Chicago, Atlanta, Baltimore and Philadelphia.

    1. Gold is depressingly expensive. 82,000 dollars is about forty ounces, which is about the size of two ice cubes.

      Sorry, I meant 2-Ice K'yoobz.

    1. Nah, I've never been to Vegas. Never will, either.

    2. Years ago, my wife and her sisters organized a "family" trip to Vegas. For 2 days they went around seeing the sights and shit while I watched the kids. This was fine, since I had little to no interest in Vegas. On the third day, they took over and my son and I spent the day at the Gun Store. When asked what he did on his summer vacation, he was able to say- "my dad and I fired 8 different kinds of machine guns".

  4. If I owned that and had it on public display, I'd be sitting within arms reach of it or someone I trusted would be.
I agree with the potential for it being an insurance scam.

    1. Not likely. Its value is higher as a specimen.

    2. Yeah, even as identifiable as it is, somebody will pay big bucks to have it in their private collection.

  6. That's a very impressive nouget, and offhand I'd say it's a bargain at $82K. But I'm kind of partial to quartz specimen gold, myself.

  7. I ran a 5 inch dredge back in the late 70's, early 80's and then an 8 inch dredge for a couple of weeks. I found a 1 oz nugget that was half crystal quartz and half gold. I sold it to a jeweler for 5k. My father, using a tiny backpack dredge found a half ounce nugget that looked like an elongated bow tie. We use to sell our dust, match tip to chickpea size, and larger to Bucks marine and mining in Dahlonega Georgia, they paid a premium over bullion price because they made jewelry to sell. I wish I had a new keene 5 inch, the creeks around Charlotte NC are loaded down with placer deposits, the entire downtown of Charlotte NC is honeycombed and criss-crossed with mining tunnels.

There was twice as much gold minted in the Carolinas as ever came out of California and I grew up between two old pit mines, The Brewer Mine, and the Haile Mine.
