Pussies

Denmark has recalled several spicy ramen noodle products by South Korean company Samyang, claiming that the capsaicin levels in them could poison consumers.

Three fiery flavours of the Samyang instant ramen line are being withdrawn: Buldak 3x Spicy & Hot Chicken, 2x Spicy & Hot Chicken and Hot Chicken Stew.

*****

Denmark doesn't strike me as a nation of spicy food lovers. Rotten fish, maybe, but not spicy foods.

Meanwhile, in about 2 hours I'll be frying up my usual breakfast of spicy hot Tennessee sausage along with a couple eggs over easy slathered with hot chow chow fortified with diced jalapenos and habanero sauce.

  1. Man - I like spicy food with flavor, but you take yours with high octane ! You are a better man than I wirecutter.

If these ramen packets are too much, half or third the spicy packet, or add another package of noodles to even it out. I like ramen, especially on a cool day.

    1. It's not as hot as it sounds. The egg yolks neutralize a lot of the heat from the chilis leaving me with a nice mix of flavors.

  2. I think the Danish government meant there was a poisonous amount of salt in each flavor packet they tested. I don't care for ramen noodle products because they are too salty for my taste. But I want to try the spicy ones now.

    1. The first paragraph says it's the capsaicin levels.

    2. If you find Ramen too salty, don't put the entire flavor packet on the noodles before you add water and cook. I use probably a 1/8 of the flavor packet and still find the end result too salty.

    3. Several easy-to-make recipes to replace the flavor packets can be found on the web. Much better than what comes with the noodles.

  3. Instead of leaving the choice to the consumer, take away his (oops.....its) choice. It's for its own good!

Alternatively, you can always try the korean or japanese version...

  5. That breakfast menu you listed sounds interesting, Ken. Probably way better than Whole Bran cereal as far as preventing constipation.

  6. I eat the 2X Buldak Spicy and Hot Chicken frequently. It is a bit 'warmer' than most other such offerings out there, but I can't say the level of heat is in any manner excessive. I can see where it might be a 'shock' to someone wholly unfamiliar with peppery food.

I consider the Buldak offerings to be in the higher end of like ramen products and enjoy them very much. My Asian grocery doesn't carry the #3 so I can't speak to it.

  8. For those of you who love spicy stuff but your stomach can't take the heat anymore, have a little chat with your doctor about a prescription for omeprazole. I used to go thru a big jar of Tums every month and now only rarely do I need one Tums a week. You're welcome.

Truth in advertising: Doc started me off with 50 mg once daily but that was causing loose bowels so he took that down to 20 mg which was just about right so I tried one every other day and that's perfect for my constitution. It's a wonder drug as far as I'm concerned.

    1. Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor. It doesn't only reduce acid production in your stomach. There are a ton of side effects, and it was never meant for long term use. It has links to dementia, loose bowels (which you mentioned) cardiac side effects, masking stomach and/or esophageal cancer, etc.
As an aside, if you're getting reflux from a food, stop eating that food. And eat less. It's not worth Barrett's esophagus or esophageal cancer

    2. Long term effects - I've reached the point where lots of foods cause a reaction. As I'm in my 70s the long term effects don't scare me so much.
