Having a smartphone doesn't necessarily mean you're smart
Police are warning motorists about fake parking tickets that appear to be authentic and prompt victims to pay the “fine” by scanning a QR code that could potentially reveal a person’s personal and or credit card information.
Our smallish resort city (15K pop.) hired out meter enforcement. $10 tickets. Either mail in checks, PayPal or Venmo. No QR code. The owner or his wife walks the downtown from 11-7.
I get those scams all the time. The latest one is I owe back-taxes which will be deducted from my next paycheque if I don't respond and give them my Social Security Number (in Canada it's Social Insurance) and bank account number. From the criminals point of view it's a great scam. Their outlay is minimal, once the computer is setup they don't have to do anything, they don't need that many fish to bite to turn a profit and they're in another country where they can't be arrested.
