TEXAS CITY, Texas (KTRK) -- An investigation is underway after a suspect was shot by an off-duty officer in Texas City on Friday evening, according to the Texas City Police Department.
The shooting happened outside a Buc-ee's gas station near the Gulf Freeway and Holland Road parking lot at around 10:35 p.m.
Wow, just about 5 minutes down the highway from where I live. If you've never been to a Buc-ees, it is the biggest destination pitstop you've ever seen. Well over 100 gas pumps, usually 90+ of them are busy with a line waiting, just at one store. The inside is almost a full mall, with sporting goods, clothing, automotive, groceries, diner, deli, camping gear, tourist trap gear, and more. Seems natural it would be a shoplifter magnet given the high volume of traffic in and out the doors at all hours of the day/night.
ReplyDeleteI did notice that a) the cop was working the store part time (thereby off-duty), b) the suspect did not have a weapon (as reported), c) the cop was not injured (as reported), and d) the shooting was due to the suspect resisting arrest (from an off-duty, non-uniformed cop). While I have no sympathy for the criminal if he is indeed a criminal, I do question whether or not I would be treated equally if I attempted to detain then shoot a shoplifter without a badge in my pocket. I guess some animals are more equal than others. Maybe he was in fear for his life? That's always a useful line.
Buc-ee's® ain't a "gas station".

DeleteI dont think I had ever noticed a bucees before we headed for Florida after christmas 2022 and we stopped at one in Georgia. Now I can tell you the Bucees near Berea Kentucky is 479 miles from my house then the one in Fort Valley Georgia is another 450 miles which puts us 450 miles from my BIL in florida. My wife, who doesnt like to shop normally spent almost 2 hours in the first one we stopped at. this spring, coming home she managed to get out in an hour. As someone commented about 100 pumps and all in use- A lot of folks just park their car at a pump then walk in the store and shop.
DeleteWhy investigate? It was a cop that shot the dude - probably had it coming. I know, I know. I figure if the left can forgive the thugs that burn and riot and loot and rape, why not go in the other direction since I'm not a lib.
