Toilet paper and flat tires: Here are the strange ways Californians ignite deadly wildfires

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. -- Of all the insidious threats faced by wildland firefighters - extreme heat, desiccated forests, unpredictable fire behavior and a nearly year-round fire season - what might be the most fearsome?

Humans.

  1. I didn't see DEWs listed.
(Or are they just reserved for Hawaii?)

  2. They didn't need a DEW to destroy Maui, just one local native that though preserving traditional water rights was more important than trying to protect the major tourist attraction on the island.

    1. That was the cover story they gave him to say. Don't believe me? I wonder, is he still employed in that position or relieved of duties and charges brought against him?

    2. Rick T, wrong. Not the cause. Contributory after the fact.

    3. Agree it wasn't the cause of the initial fire but lack of water to fight the fire early is certainly part of the reason Lahaina is gone.

  3. I tried reading it but it was tedious... Did Ca. ever clean out the dead underbrush that was prevalent and fueled all those fires few years ago ?

    1. Almost half of the timberland in California is managed by the federal government. Until they reinstitute an active timber sale program nothing will change. And right now, environmentalists are in control of the federal agencies. That means nothing will change and California will continue to burn.

The 402,042 acre Park Fire is currently burning northeast of Chico, CA. It's the fourth largest fire in California history. The Left will never let what needs to be done happen to prevent fires. They'd rather see it all burn than to see one load of logs or load of chips removed for the benefit of mankind and the health of the forest.

    3. I'm lucky that I live near the Tahoe National Forest. It's the N.F. that has the best fire history of all the Sierra national forests. When the current Tahoe Forest Supervisor was picked I didn't hold much hope, but he's done some amazing things, including treating close to 200,000 acres with thinning, burning and mastication projects in the Noth Yuba River drainage. He's bringing people together to get it done and it's a wonderful thing to behold.

  4. Evil Google's AI says most fires are caused by humans BUT the very first article says 2/3 of all wildfires in the US are lightning and 92% worldwide.

    1. The stats here in AB were 82% human caused with lightening being 90% of the non-human caused ones. Of course the cbc wouldn't publish those stats they just keep bringing up climate change.

  5. Just so you'all have an idea of where the Park Fire started. Bidwell Park stood in for Sherwood Forest in Errol Flynn's "The Adventures of Robinhood."

  6. The article titles it as a wildfire, but admit to arson in the first paragraph. They don't even realize the depth of their own propaganda. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/pacific-northwest-wildfires-force-evacuations-smoke-chokes-swaths-us-2024-07-25/

  7. About the only thing they didn't list was spontaneous combustion.

  8. lf you have a flat tire and you are 500 feet from the gas station, you may want to push (the car instead.)
Instead of starting a forest fire?

  9. I stopped reading at.....
Natural causes still play a significant role, especially lightning, which could become even a bigger threat with climate change.

They led the article off with 'humans causing the fires thru stupidity '. But had to work in climate change. Assholes
